After quite some fiddling, I found the error. <enter confessional> My 
Slackware install is not exactly vanilla. I have HAL and d-bus from 
Dropline GNOME, along with PAM <hides under the carpet>. But the SLIM 
login manager is not PAM-enabled, as I painfully discovered. So I 
replaced it by a PAM-enabled GDM, since Slackware is a GNOME-friendly 
distribution <digs a hole in the ground>, and now everything works OK.

So much to illustrate the KICK principle. Keep It Complicated Kovacs.
