I think it's OK to use symlink in this situation. There are already
Slackware packages, which do exactly that, e.g. Mutt:
$ ls -l /usr/doc/mutt-1.4.2.3
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2007-05-29 17:21 /usr/doc/mutt-1.4.2.3 -> mutt/
