Upgrading gtk+2 is asking for even more issues.

If pygtk 2.10 is not compatible with gtk+2-2.8.x, then we need to put
a version that *is* compatible with it in our repo.  That raises
another question:  why does it work for me (and the others who've
tested and/or used it)?

I'm thinking that there are other issues with the OP's system.
Perhaps try to reinstall python and any other associated packages
(the ones which are part of Slackware) and see if that helps.
