While "make -j4" might be appropriate for you, "make -j8" might be appropriate for me, and "make -j2" might be best for someone else. As I see it, the best thing to do is use plain "make" -- that way, I (and everyone else) can set MAKEFLAGS in my shell environment. One thing that must be remembered is that MAKEFLAGS are sometimes necessary to compile the software. For example, postfix requires the use of MAKEFLAGS to enable SSL/TLS. I believe nethack requires a MAKEFLAGS variable be set to compile for different GUIs. -- It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, Than for a man to hear the song of fools. I was wondering what the problem is, and in case anyone here is interested... if LC_ALL=en_CA (or en_US), then bash matches files with lowercase letters when you use the pattern [A-Z][A-Z]*, which I find surprising. (tcsh on Slack 12.1 and bash on FreeBSD 4.11-STABLE don't seem to have this (mis?)behaviour.) > Personally i do not even own hardware this driver is for... > (A neighbor does, and this script seems to work overthere fine too fwiw). Yup, I guess they don't have an LC_COLLATE or LC_ALL which causes your pattern to do something unintended. Clearly, I can "fix" my LC_ALL setting to make the script work. But I wonder if there are other places in slackbuild scripts that implicitly assume LC_COLLATE=C (Posix). Is this something that should be added to the instructions for slackbuild creators? (I.e., they should set LC_ALL to make sure they are built in a known environment.) Cheers. Here are just some of the changes in sbopkg 0.0.9: * Several bug fixes in the update list to prevent false positives. Thanks to ktabic and Antoine for the bug reports. * Fixed some things so that a user can now correctly set a different $TMP, $SRCDIR, $OUTPUT etc. in sbopkg.conf, which means that someone can completely segregate sbopkg and its related SBo-building and package dumping directories, for example, /sbo/tmp, /sbo/cache, /sbo/packages etc. See the sbopkg.conf(5) man page for details. Thanks to Ken Roberts for the bug report. * New features include the ability to clear the cache directory from within the dialog interface and to display all installed SBo packages in the dialog and cli. * The search results page has been improved and the user can now jump directly to a package's information menu from the search results page. Thanks to Erik Hanson for the diffs, suggestions, whitespace cleanups, and bug fixes. * Menu navigation has been greatly improved so that sbopkg remembers where you are when navigating up and down through the menus. Again, big thanks to Erik Hanson for this improvement. Any resulting bugs or problems are my fault. :-) Please report them to me via email, the sbopkg mailing list, or you can find me on freenode at #sbopkg or the usual suspects, #slackbuilds or ##slackware. If you won't need it, there's no need to compile it now. If you notice later that you do need it, you can add it later too, as it's only a runtime dependency and requires no recompilation of rosegarden. I compile the SlackBuild as root, and it worked. I had always did a "SU" to root before. Anyway, I now have everything compiled including runtime stuff and a working copy of Rosegarden. Libcap was a problem but we used the 12.0 build, and it seems to work. Libcap v2.11 12.1 would not compile on my system. Question: I compiled the kernel so that I have this: $ grep CAPABILITIES /boot/config CONFIG_SECURITY_CAPABILITIES=y CONFIG_SECURITY_FILE_CAPABILITIES=y Can I remove this from the kernel now that I'm using libcap v1.92 for Slackware 12.0? I've been running linux for six weeks now, and just made the switch from ubuntu to slackware. When I run b43-fwcutter.Slackbuild, the program finishes with Error 1. Again, I'm running Slackware 12.1. The kernel is compiled for: grep CAPABILITIES /boot/config CONFIG_SECURITY_CAPABILITIES=y CONFIG_SECURITY_FILE_CAPABILITIES=y The SlackBuild for libcap-2.11 for 12.1 gave me some error problems compiling, but not anymore. I don't know what changed but it just compiled without a hitch. Anyway, I have libcap-1.97-i486-1_SBo.tgz for 12.0 installed. I have libcap-2.11-i486-1_SBo.tgz for 12.1 compiled. Can I just: removepkg libcap-1.97-i486-1_SBo.tgz and installpkg libcap-2.11-i486-1_SBo.tgz without messing with header files? Hopefully this will be my last post. Thank you for your > time. > > First off, you may want to go ahead and try to get that ethernet working so you have network access of your own. Unless you have a really unusual chipset, ethernet is pretty much a plug-and-play setup for most machines under Slackware. If you need to change network settings (DHCP vs. static IP, gateway, etc.), run the 'netconfig' utility from the command line. Wireless is frequently much more of a challenge depending on the hardware. That said, it looks like you may have an issue with the /usr/lib/crt1.o file, which is part of the glibc package. If I recall correctly, crt1.o is part of the Linux wrapper code that gets linked into any compiled binary, so you probably won't be able to compile much without it. Could just be that the file got damaged somehow, check it out with the following: $ ls -l /usr/lib/crt1.o -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2344 2008-04-20 01:05 /usr/lib/crt1.o $ md5sum /usr/lib/crt1.o 0f9cbe1e1ffba1b6bb75f0e2d85b4df3 /usr/lib/crt1.o I just reinstalled glibc from one of the primary mirrors (OSU OSL), so the above values should be the correct ones. If yours are different, then that should be the problem. The easiest solution is just to reinstall the glibc-2.7-i486-10.tgz package, which you can either download from one of the mirrors or find in the /slackware/l/ directory on your installation CD's. If you reinstall from CD, you should probably check the md5sum on the package there first, just to make sure the problem wasn't actually with the copy on your CD. It should be: 1be4d071fe6d80fdf27fcfc205f031de ./slackware/l/glibc-2.7-i486-10.tgz If that doesn't fix it, try attaching the full output from the SlackBuild script, and maybe we can figure out what the real problem is. Yes, I should have posted here and I was reminded at LQ for not doing that. My apologies. I do not maintain a full install of Slackware. Through the LQ discussion (https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/cant-compile-slackbuilds.org-tightvnc-664472/#post3256598) I discovered I had to reinstall the lesstif package to build tightvnc. The build process was looking for usr/lib/X11/config/host.def, which was not installed on my box. Reinstalling the lesstif package solved that particular issue. Perhaps a note could be added to the tightvnc slackbuild page to remind users of this. Second, I always modify build scripts to change the location of $TMP because I use my own sandbox area to build packages. I also mount my /tmp partition with the noexec option in fstab. To build tightvnc I had to temporarily make /tmp executable. Something in the build process was ignoring my modified $TMP location --- I think the imakefile is the culprit. I am not well versed in software compiling to be sure. Anyway, I was urged to forward these "problems" to this list. I hope this information helps. Thanks for all the great build scripts. P.S. I'm not a member of this list. The problem was I resolved downloading the .tar.gz file and changing the 46th line of the Slackbuild script from .bz2 to .gz. 2 - There's a typo in the subtitleeditor dependecy list. The last package is a library called libxmlxx (libxml++) but in the site the name is stated as "libxlmxx". The build process was looking for > usr/lib/X11/config/host.def, which was not installed on my box. This may perhaps be a bug, but I'm not sure what the best way around it is. The lesstif package "claims" the host.def file as its own, so if lesstif was once installed and is removed later, then the host.def file will vanish. I would think this could break compiling a lot of things, not just tightvnc. The xorg-cf-files package also installs a host.def file -- it simply touches an empty file, which is enough to make anything that doesn't actually need lesstif compile. Perhaps the lesstif package should be installing a host.def.new and moving it over iff the existing host.def is empty? The problem with that solution is that if someone removes lesstif later they'll still run into compile issues since lesstif's host.def will be left behind with references to missing files. Before anyone chimes in that we need to introduce package removal scripts, I'd like to give my opinion of that. While it could handle this particular case, I'd rather not change the long-standing package format, and this is the only case I know of where something really paints things into a corner. It would be easy to use something like that wrong and create packages that could shoot yourself in the foot. Given that, I'd be more likely to consider "exceptions" in removepkg to handle this corner case, since they are so rare. Although, if these were part of the package, I don't see that it would be functionally different from adding remove-time script support. Maybe a note about this in CHANGES_AND_HINTS would be a better solution, since the fix is so simple: touch /usr/lib/X11/config/host.def Take care, Pat From moacir.souza at gmail.com Mon Aug 25 03:02:44 2008 From: moacir.souza at gmail.com (Moacir Souza) Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2008 00:02:44 -0300 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] ffmpeg little mistake Message-ID: <3b4dc1f00808242002u3a97da66q5ff893a41dee1e49@mail.gmail.com> Hi folks, I was installing ffmpeg today and I found a little thing that isn't mentioned in the RADME file. The location and names of the header files have changed, the name of the options, in some revisions ffmpeg -formats does not return proper info, so programs that are gui encoders for ffmpeg fail to notice ffmpeg is even installed. DVDStyler, wxSVG, just to name 2 will not build against newer ffmpeg's without modifying their source code, or appending some ./configure options. I know there are others, but can not remember them off the top of my head. None of this is an issue with ffmpeg directly, but the 3rd party developers' source code, and their lack of comments as to which version they require :-/. Considering ffmpeg is an extremely fast moving project, it's hard for anyone to keep up with. Rather than having to have the latest and greatest for no other reason than it's newer I tend to stick with the version that has the best compatibility with other programs. x264 has the same issues. There are known compile, and run time errors with different revisions in 2008. Some of the options just flat out don't work, depending on your CPU type, and 32bit vs 64bit. x264 is in a constant state of flux at the current moment. I've found 20080301 to work rather well, and have had numerous issues with anything previous, and gave up trying from 20080315 - 200807xx. After 4 months and no stable code base I've just stuck with the 20080301 release. > Best regards > Nille > > _______________________________________________ > SlackBuilds-users mailing list > SlackBuilds-users at slackbuilds.org > http://lists.slackbuilds.org/mailman/listinfo/slackbuilds-users > Archives - http://lists.slackbuilds.org/pipermail/slackbuilds-users/ > FAQ - http://slackbuilds.org/faq/ > > > From me at alkos333.net Tue Aug 26 16:03:21 2008 From: me at alkos333.net (alkos333) Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 11:03:21 -0500 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] vcdimager's README outdated Message-ID: vcdimager's README in 12.1 rep still says libcdio is a needed dependency when is has become a part of Slackware. Once again, thanks to several great bug reports and patches from users, there has been some good improvement and enhancements since 0.0.9 that are befitting a new decimal place release. :-) Some of the highlights include: * Committed a patch from that fixes ubuntulooks update bug, removes $ARCH from the update comparison code to prevent false positive when different arches are used, and fixes libsigc++ and TiMidity++ update bugs; thanks to Bert Babington for the patch. * Modified the sbopkg.conf file to allow easier/more correct exporting of variables; thanks to Ken Roberts for the patch and helpful dialog on the issue. Please note that the default sbopkg $TMP has moved from /tmp to /tmp/SBo, so be sure to move your permanent build log and package debugging list, if any, to the new location. * Renamed sbopkg.conf.sample to sbopkg.conf.new and incorporate a doinst.sh script per general Slackware convention; thanks to Ken Roberts for the suggestion, patch, and doinst.sh script. This sbopkg.conf.new is the new 'sample' configuration file. As such, please back up your old sbopkg.conf and then consider merging any changes you made to your old sbopkg.conf and then renaming the sbopkg.conf.new to sbopkg.conf. * Add a "Return to Main Menu' function in the package information menu; thanks to Murat D. Kadirov for the suggestion. * Include fixes for several other packages in the update code. * Fixed some typos; thanks to samac for the report. * Add a feature to view the sbopkg README from the main menu. * Lots and lots of little fixes, tweaks, and cleanups throughout the script. The error checking and other similar low-level plumbing issues are generally improved. * Several changes/edits to the man pages and other documentation. This is the second release of sbopkg to include a full ChangeLog of all the SVN commits so more details can be found in that document. Thanks to everyone who submitted a bug report, patch, suggestion or otherwise provided feedback. As always, please report any bugs to me via email, the sbopkg mailing list, or, preferably, using the Issue tracker on the project's website. I can also be found in #sbopkg, #slackbuilds, and ##slackware on freenode. There was a discussion on freenode where someone had a similar issue. It's most likely the same cause, which is /usr/share/texmf/bin/ being not in $PATH. As this is the default on Slackware after a full install, there's obviously something wrong with the setup. The missing files are indeed included in slackwares base tetex package. Too many e-mails open at one time. Oh well. So, I did build the jack-audio-connector, but I had to alter the options in the buildscript to exclude capabilities. This allowed jack to build, and thus rosegarden and ardour, but I'm not certain things are all fine-and-dandy. I intended to do some more research before asking but ... Thanks for any input.
