Well for my systems:
drwxr-xr-x 18 root root 4096 2008-10-17 00:50 /var/
For less /tmp/leafnode-2.0.0.alpha20080904a-i486-1_SBo.tgz:drwxr-xr-x
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 2008-10-17 23:38 var/
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 2008-10-17 23:38 var/spool/
Which to me, seems to be as things should be. Perhaps you have a non standard
umask for either user/root ?? Unless I am missing something?
