Not the above suspect, I haven't gone back to source to trace what went awry.

No, but I had a little trouble with permissions, had to set them up properly, 
something had cleared world permissions also under /var/<forgot_what>.  Oh, 
and permissions on /tmp were wrecked too, had to fix the cleared world perms 
there -- cron jobs run as user were failing 'cos no /tmp file creation :(

But this could have been left over from the /var oddness, took a while for 
me to notice another process failing.

Anyway, leafnode-2 built from source is running okay except sometimes it 
stops with a stuck lock file that I have to delete manually and run 
fetchnews again.  I have it setup for once/hour operation but ISP NNTP 
connections have lots of packet loss, which is why I'm running leafnode 
in the first place.  Using two NNTP servers, news.motzarella.org + ISP's 
netnews.dodo.com.au, both on 90 second timeout
