We had a family emergency that took me away for a couple of days. I have not tested tangogps with the changes I installed as thoroughly as I would have liked, but the testing I did resulted in no segfaults, which were pretty easy to provoke before I installed the changes below. I have reached the point where I've had enough problems with slackbuilds and I'm tired of the pain of slackware package management (or lack thereof) that I'm giving debian a try (I found that I could install it without a desktop environment, exactly what I wanted; I just run dwm) and I have to do it on the netbook for various reasons. So I no longer have slackware installed on that machine, so I won't be able to do further testing in a car. But I think it's safe to install the changes below. Here are the diffs: diff src/tile_management.c /home/dca/Software/tangogps-0.99.4/src/tile_management.c 249a250 > curl_easy_setopt(curl, CURLOPT_NOSIGNAL, 1); diff src/util.c /home/dca/Software/tangogps-0.99.4/src/util.c 111a112 > curl_easy_setopt(curl_handle, CURLOPT_NOSIGNAL, 1); 168a170 > curl_easy_setopt(curl_handle, CURLOPT_NOSIGNAL, 1); The left-hand files (in src/) as the originals; the right-hand files are the ones I modified, adding the calls to curl_easy_setopt. So I no longer have slackware > installed on that machine, so I won't be able to do further testing in a > car. > Well, this was an interesting exercise, leaving me sheepishly coming back to Slackware after a couple of days of experimentation. Having been reminded, at my advanced age, that "convenience" exacts a price. Debian's wireless stuff is flakey on my netbook, a showstopper. It worked, and then it didn't; config files unchanged and correct, dhcpcd installed properly. Plus, Debian's packages tend to be old, so for certain applications where I care about having the most recent version, such as gnucash, I'd be in the business of building from source, without the help of slackbuild scripts and dependency information (building gnucash 2.4.7 was not fun). Then there's the awful Sys V init setup and the general feeling that Debian is too complicated. Speaking of complicated, I then I spent some time trying Gentoo, which I used for a couple of years in the past. Installation is a multi-hour proposition, especially on a slow machine, and I found that X did not work correctly on the machine where I tried it. It's also an ongoing maintenance headache, which is the reason I gave up on it when it was my primary distribution. Once I started having X problems, that was that. I didn't even bother with Arch, which I tried a few years ago. Their rolling release idea means that because they are continuously releasing new stuff, they can't possibly test the whole system every time something new appears. And occasionally, something new will appear that will blow up your system if you install it, at which point you get to boot from a CD and learn how to use chroot. I have been running FreeBSD 8.2 on three of my machines and it's a solid system. But yesterday, I tried to upgrade gnucash to 2.4.7, that version having appeared in /usr/ports after an update. One of the standard port management tools (portmaster) failed miserably in managing the upgrade, leaving me with a gnucash executable that segfaulted immediately. Various attempts to rescue the situation failed. Getting to gnucash 2.4.7 with slackware is easy. I have a home-brew make-based tool that I use to wget slackbuilds, source files, info files, etc. from slackbuilds.org and whatever it points to. Dependencies are expressed in the makefile. I had built 2.4.5 using this (that's the current version available from slackbuilds.org), so all the dependencies were installed, and therefore upgrading to 2.4.7 was a simple matter of downloading the source tarball and running the slackbuild script manually. When I realized how easy this was, compared to what I had been through with debian and freebsd, it dawned on me that I was heading in exactly the wrong direction, away from from slackware. So I'm back, chastened. The moral of the story is that while things in the Slackware world aren't perfect, for my minimalist tastes (I don't run a desktop environment, just dwm with some of the standard patches, one of which I contributed), it's better for me than anything else I can find. Live and learn. /Don -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I ran into similar problems trying to build one of the 2.4 series from source with 2.2.9 installed. The advice I got from Derek Atkins, one of the gnucash gurus, was to either remove the old version or configure with a --prefix != /usr/local. The former would seem to apply in this case. > > 2011/8/8 jamesgilmour : > > Hi, > > I'm trying to install gnucash but it doesn't get past the > > bottom of this page. > > I had no problem with gnucash 2.2.9 and then tried the upgrade. > > I followed the dependency compilation instructions without > > apparent difficulty and elected to include 'webkit' and libdb, > > also ok. > > > > Here is the last screen of the 'gnucash'build process before it > > stops. > > Can you help? > > > > after-statement -O2 -march=i486 -mtune=i686 -Wall -Wunused > > -Wmissing-prototypes -Wmissing-declarations -Wno-unused -o gnucash > > gnucash-bin.o ../../src/libqof/qof/libgnc-qof.la ../../src/core-utils/ > libgnc-core-utils.la ../../src/engine/libgncmod-engine.la ../../src/gnome/ > libgnc-gnome.la ../../src/gnome-utils/libgncmod-gnome-utils.la../../src/app-utils/ > libgncmod-app-utils.la ../../src/gnc-module/libgnc-module.la > > -pthread -lguile -lltdl -lgmp -lcrypt -lm -lltdl -pthread > > -Wl,--export-dynamic -lgobject-2.0 -lgthread-2.0 -lgmodule-2.0 -lrt > > -lglib-2.0 -pthread -lgnomeui-2 -lSM -lICE -lbonoboui-2 -lgnomevfs-2 > > -lgnomecanvas-2 -lgnome-2 -lpopt -lbonobo-2 -lbonobo-activation > > -lORBit-2 -lart_lgpl_2 -lgtk-x11-2.0 -lgdk-x11-2.0 -latk-1.0 -lgio-2.0 > > -lpangoft2-1.0 -lpangocairo-1.0 -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0 -lm -lcairo > > -lpango-1.0 -lfreetype -lfontconfig -lgconf-2 -lgmodule-2.0 > > -lgobject-2.0 -lgthread-2.0 -lrt -lglib-2.0 -pthread -lgtk-x11-2.0 > > -lgdk-x11-2.0 -latk-1.0 -lgio-2.0 -lpangoft2-1.0 -lpangocairo-1.0 > > -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0 -lm -lcairo -lpango-1.0 -lfreetype -lfontconfig > > -lgobject-2.0 -lgmodule-2.0 -lgthread-2.0 -lrt -lglib-2.0 -lm -lm > > libtool: link: gcc -Wdeclaration-after-statement -O2 -march=i486 > > -mtune=i686 -Wall -Wunused -Wmissing-prototypes -Wmissing-declarations > > -Wno-unused -o .libs/gnucash gnucash-bin.o -pthread -pthread > > -Wl,--export-dynamic -pthread > > -pthread ../../src/libqof/qof/.libs/libgnc-qof.so > ../../src/core-utils/.libs/libgnc-core-utils.so > ../../src/engine/.libs/libgncmod-engine.so > ../../src/gnome/.libs/libgnc-gnome.so > ../../src/gnome-utils/.libs/libgncmod-gnome-utils.so > ../../src/app-utils/.libs/libgncmod-app-utils.so > ../../src/gnc-module/.libs/libgnc-module.so /usr/lib/libguile.so > /usr/lib/libgmp.so > > -lcrypt /usr/lib/libltdl.so /usr/lib/libgnomeui-2.so /usr/lib/libSM.so > /usr/lib/libICE.so /usr/lib/libbonoboui-2.so /usr/lib/libgnomevfs-2.so > /usr/lib/libgnomecanvas-2.so /usr/lib/libgnome-2.so /usr/lib/libpopt.so > /usr/lib/libbonobo-2.so /usr/lib/libbonobo-activation.so > /usr/lib/libORBit-2.so /usr/lib/libart_lgpl_2.so /usr/lib/libgconf-2.so > /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so /usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so /usr/lib/ > libatk-1.0.so /usr/lib/libgio-2.0.so /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so /usr/lib/ > libpangocairo-1.0.so /usr/lib/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so /usr/lib/libcairo.so > /usr/lib/libpango-1.0.so /usr/lib/libfreetype.so /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so > /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so /usr/lib/libgmodule-2.0.so /usr/lib/ > libgthread-2.0.so > > -lrt /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so -lm -pthread -Wl,-rpath > > -Wl,/usr/lib/gnucash /usr/lib/gnucash/libgncmod-report-gnome.so: > > undefined reference to > > `gnc_html_export' /usr/lib/gnucash/libgncmod-report-gnome.so: > > undefined reference to > > `gnc_html_copy' /usr/lib/gnucash/libgncmod-report-gnome.so: undefined > > reference to `gnc_html_new' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status > > make[4]: *** [gnucash] Error 1 make[4]: Leaving directory > > `/tmp/SBo/gnucash-2.4.5/src/bin' make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 > > make[3]: Leaving directory `/tmp/SBo/gnucash-2.4.5/src/bin' make[2]: > > *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory > > `/tmp/SBo/gnucash-2.4.5/src' make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 > > make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/SBo/gnucash-2.4.5' make: *** [all] > > > > > > > > > > Error 2 gnucash: Would you like to continue processing the rest of the > > build queue or would you like to abort? I've also written a slackbuild for a package called hydrogen-drumkits, that includes all the add-on kits available from the Hydrogen site. This slackbuild pretty much consists of one line (that runs drumkit2pkg). It doesn't look anything like a normal SBo script. The result is a noarch package with all the files in /usr/share/hydrogen (and /usr/doc). The only actual information contained in the build is in the DOWNLOAD= line in the .info file (about 20 URLs there). Someone who's just installed Hydrogen for the first time will probably do what I did: grab every drumkit they can find, to hear which ones sound good. Having a package in SBo would be convenient for them. Can I submit a script like that (with its own copy of drumkit2pkg included, since it's pretty small), or do I have to rewrite the thing using the SBo template? Whatever else I do, I *don't* want to break it up into 20-odd packages with one drumkit each. Probably nobody else wants that either... Probably nobody else wants that either... There are several SlackBuild scripts in our repository for "data" packages, or "additional options", like supertuxkart-extra-karts, supertuxkart-extra-tracks, leocad_pieces, LDraw_data (the last two are my own). Nothing is really "built" by these scripts, but they put the data in the correct location and set the correct permissions. Maybe your SlackBuild should makepkg them into a single .tgz. That would be a worthwhile bit of added value. -D. Is there really that much code > in drumkit2pkg that it can't be done in the SlackBuild itself? Well, there's code in drumkit2pkg that's irrelevant to the SlackBuild: it can wget the tarballs, and it can alter the drumkit.xml so that all the hi-hat drums are in the same mute group (so that, if you've got an open hi-hat hit, followed by a closed one, the open hit won't keep ringing out over the closed hit. This is *essential* for realistic-sounding drums, but I don't call this code from hydrogen-drumkits.SlackBuild). The script actually tries to find the documentation within the .h2drumkit tarball and place it in /usr/doc. It looks for demo-songs within the tarball, places them where they belong (different dir from the drumkits). It specifically looks for a drumkit.xml file (and refuses to makepkg if it doesn't find it). It tries to handle incorrectly-packaged drumkits (that don't contain a top-level directory within the tarball). If you don't give it a slack-desc, it generates one... It basically tries to be more generic than a regular SlackBuild would be. > It looks like these h2drumkit files are just tarballs. What all do you > have to do (besides unpack and place the files in the correct location) > that, again, can't be done in the SlackBuild? Nothing, I just don't want to rewrite the thing, is what this boils down to... especially if I'm ever going to submit more drumkit packages (in which case I'd have multiple copies of it, possibly different from each other). Eh, at this point, this thread now contains more text than the script contains actual code, maybe I should have just STFU and submitted it. OK, just my two cents. The way I understand it, the templates serve to make maintenance easier and avoid common mistakes. They are meant for standard situations. Non-standard situations require non-standard scripts, so there isn't really a problem. What you probably should do is keeping the variables that make sense and write it in a clean and easy to understand way (preferably). Also, the error handling should be consistent with the templates (in outher words, bail out on errors, rather than ignore them). I'm not an admin, but I think that's pretty much what it bouils down to. > Eh, at this point, this thread now contains more text than the script > contains actual code, maybe I should have just STFU and submitted it. I'd probably submit a stripped down version of drumkit2pkg that does only what's necessary to build the package in the way closest to a traditional SlackBuild. That is to say it doesn't try to get the sources itself, rather it expects them to be in the current directory. I don't see any problem with editing config files such that they make for a more useable package (something which I've done before and no-one seems to have minded (or noticed!)). > The script actually tries to find the documentation within the > .h2drumkit tarball and place it in /usr/doc. My favourite way is only changing the version number in "clamav.SlackBuild". And searching in "slackfind.net" shows some other guys who present their clamav binaries, mostly based on their slightly modified "clamav.SlackBuild". Viele Gruesse! Eh, or, if anyone has a solution for this, it'd be cool if that were mentioned in the README instead. Just a thought. Just a thought. I don't understand the problem myself, but I know a man who does, because the gpsd-dev mailing list just had some traffic on this exact topic. https://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/gpsd-dev/2011-August/009399.html "The build system must never ever use a hard-coded version of gcc or set $PATH to what-it-thinks-is-right, but instead use $PATH from the environment it was started from. Otherwise neither ccache nor scan-build (and so on...) will work." The related patch changed this line in the SConstruct: -env = Environment(tools=["default", "tar", "textfile"], options=opts) to this: +env = Environment(tools=["default", "tar", "textfile"], options=opts, ENV = {'PATH' : os.environ['PATH']}) As I say, this is not something I understand, but the above information purports to contain some sort of solution. -D. The jack-audio-connection-kit README mentions this, and claims that POSIX capabilities aren't supported on reiserfs, but this is outdated (reiserfs in 13.37 does support them). These capabilities make a noticeable difference in audio quality even when using a stock Slack kernel without the realtime patch. Without cap_sys_nice, it's possible for e.g. the cached samples in fluidsynth to be swapped to disk, causing huge gaps in playback. Without cap_ipc_lock, you get smaller gaps, but lots of them (known as x-runs, in jack terminology). In fact, it's safe to say that these audio applications are completely useless without the capabilities (meaning that every user who installs any of them, has to manually run the above setcap command, assuming they're aware they need to). The caps have to be set in the doinst.sh because tar doesn't preserve POSIX filesystem capability bits. Comments, objections, discussion...? I am maintaining a few audio Slackbuildscripts and thought about doing so, but i was afraid it would be removed. Would it? Maybe for security or whatever reasons we add an option to all these scripts that is mentioned in the README like this: "to disable setcaps pass the option --disable-caps to the script" $ whatever.Slackbuild --disable-caps The default behavior then would be to include setcaps in the doinst.sh. Which is not a bad thing, but it's definitely more work and more complexity. If it were up to me, I'd just put the setcaps stuff in doinst.sh, not make it optional, but I would make a note in the README... and maybe I'd install the setcap'ed binaries 0750, owner root, group audio (so only users in the audio group can execute them). So in the SlackBuild itself, you'd have (after 'make install'), something like this: chmod 0750 $PKG/usr/bin/$PRGNAM chown root.audio $PKG/usr/bin/$PRGNAM (Add extra lines if there are extra binaries of course). In doinst.sh: setcap cap_ipc_lock,cap_sys_nice=ep usr/bin/whatever (Again, extra lines if there are extra binaries. setcap doesn't take multiple filenames, so you can't say usr/bin/* here. Also notice the lack of a leading / [it's usr/bin, not /usr/bin]). In README: Note: This package installs binaries that execute with elevated resource limits. Only users in the audio group will be allowed to run them. [Insert URL of a longer explanation here, maybe]. That's my 2 cents worth (which is probably only worth $0.0002 due to inflation). It may be that qjackctrl needs realtime too > but I haven't had time to test this yet. qjackctl does need it... but so does ardour (and rosegarden, and ecasound, and jack-rack, and rakarrack, and anything else that does audio capture and/or can apply LADSPA or LV2 effects during playback, in realtime), and anything that's a synthesizer or sampler (like hydrogen, bristol, fluidsynth/qsynth, aeolus, zynaddsubfx, linuxsampler, etc). Even stuff like lingot (guitar tuner) and japa (oscilloscope/meter) benefit from it. Ardour will actually pop up dialog boxes at startup warning you if it can't set realtime priority and/or lock enough memory... and the Ardour web site has directions (for PAM systems only) on how to set it up. So I'm not the only one who thinks it's necessary... Pretty much anything that lists libjack.so in its ldd output will need it, in my experience. Eh, so I wrote a script to look for just that (attached), and set the caps on everything in /usr/bin that has it. But doing it in the package system seems like a cleaner approach. If you're running on a really high-end system (4+ cores, 1GHz+ frontside bus, really nice M-Audio pro audio interface), you might not have any x-runs no matter what you do... but we can't all afford that, and I promise, the realtime cap bits make a big difference trying to use jack & its apps on an older or budget machine. And also on some of those really high-end machines, depending on what hardware's in 'em. If you're recording yourself playing guitar, singing, whatever... you can't afford to have *any* x-runs during recording, if you want professional results. BTW, I am one of the other guys working on the studioware project :) (though I haven't been all that active lately) > I can see making jackd audio group only would be a safer option, but > aren't most users in the audio group anyway? The audio-group-only idea might be nice, but maybe not essential. Binaries with extra capabilities aren't as dangerous as setuid root binaries, but they maybe should still be handled with care. > I'll watch this thread with interest anyway. Yeah. I'm hoping to hear from other people (so far it's mostly been me ranting & raving, it'd be much better to have lots of opinions & a discussion). -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Recent versions of Awesome require altering quite a bit of Slackware's packages (from the top of my head: recompile cairo to include xcb support, update xcb-util, startup-notification, ...) which might go against SBo's guidelines. I maintain my own SlackBuild @ https://github.com/cycojesus/slackbuilds/tree/master/xap/awesome and I have a document detailing all the steps needed to install it on a stock Slackware if it can help you. I expect xcb-util and startup-notification to be updated one day or another, hopefully with all the xcb-util-* packages it has been spliteed into upstream... For cairo, even though I can't find it right now, he answered something about xcb support being experimental and some instabilities reports so I wouldn't count on a "fixed" cairo just now... I attach my install guideline if anyone's interested, it uses SBo packages when available, otherwise my own (and 3 of my own (at least) build directly from git head ;) .) Studioware is an attempt at joining forces, although we don't have an automatic submission system at all, but since we are only a small project at the moment that isn't a problem. The latter is quite hard to build right: setup.py is configured to install include files under /usr/include/python2.6/CXX and "source" files under /usr/share/python2.6/CXX. As I dind't find anything related to /usr/share/python2.6 in Slackware but it looks ok from the respective debian/rule I think it's a debianism used by the source code mantainer. On the other hand, I have some locally installed python packages which put stuff under /usr/share/packagename (like pygtk and pygobject). My first try was to install stuff under /usr/share/CXX, unfortunately the supplied demo will not work as they looks for files in /usr/share/python2.6/CXX (hardcoded). When I moved to pysvn, same problem applies: search path is hardcoded as /usr/share/python2.6/CXX but, this time, I was able to supply an extra path using the --pycxx-src-dir switch. What should I do now? 1) installing files under /usr/share/python2.6/CXX so both the demos and pysvn build with no changes at all 2) installing files under /usr/share/CXX and use pysvn setup.py switch to point to the right folder To me option number 2 looks best but it will probably mean more work for everyone who needs to build anything against PyCXX as there is no pkgconfig or anything similar which will tell you where needed files are. ciao -- Marco Bonetti Tor research and other stuff: http://sid77.slackware.it/ Slackintosh Linux Project Developer: http://workaround.ch/ Linux-live for powerpc: http://workaround.ch/pub/rsync/mb/linux-live/ My GnuPG key id: 0x0B60BC5F From dave at dawoodfall.net Fri Aug 26 05:29:01 2011 From: dave at dawoodfall.net (David Woodfall) Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2011 06:29:01 +0100 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] Orphaned packages In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <20110826052901.GA22529@Junius> On (13:47 25/08/11), Mauro Giachero put forth the proposition: >I'm really sorry to announce I'm no longer able to maintain my SlackBuilds >(as all those folks asking for Ekiga updates probably noticed). >The following packages are therefore orphan: What is the state of ekiga these days? I also think option 2 is nicer, but if it creates more troubles for PyCXX users, it's probably better to stick with defaults, as ugly as they are. -- Audrius Ka?ukauskas -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I decided to wait until the next version (1.5), which eventually was released, but now I couldn't build it myself. After reporting the problem to developers, it got fixed in recently released version 1.6. PyPy builds fine now for me (both 32- and 64-bit versions). It's just that I'm not sure if I want to submit the build script again. The reason is this: PyPy takes a lot of time and memory to build. And I don't want to create more work for SBo admins, who are already busy with never-ending queue of new submissions. So I'm just going to leave a link to PyPy SlackBuild for those interested: https://bitbucket.org/audriusk/slackbuilds/src/83b994606664/python/pypy/ And if you don't want to spend few hours building it (or don't have enough RAM), but still want to try it out, here are Slackware packages I made: https://bitbucket.org/audriusk/slackbuilds/downloads/pypy-1.6-i486-2ak.txz https://bitbucket.org/audriusk/slackbuilds/downloads/pypy-1.6-x86_64-2ak.txz Of course, you have to trust me to use them. ;-) A note about 32-bit package: for some reason it haven't got linked against libffi (probably environment issues, as I built it in 32-bit LXC container on 64-bit host), but it still should be usable, as libffi is only used for C extensions AFAIK (and compiling those is still considered experimental). -- Audrius Ka?ukauskas -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I have just submitted a version bump for Frostwire. If you are like me and loose track of updates, please note that the 5.x series has dropped gnutella support and is now a a bittorrent only search engine. Therefore, if you need gnutella support, stick with the latest 4.x or switch to another client. 01-AUG-2011 http://frostwire.wordpress.com/2011/08/01/frostwire-5-bittorrent-so-simple/ With the landscape of file sharing shifting to BitTorrent we saw the opportunity build up on it?s strengths and to make the BitTorrent experience a lot easier and simpler, one that your mom can handle. We dropped Gnutella search and replaced it with the curated indexes of major HTTP BitTorrent Search Engines (and we?ll keep adding more with each release). The results are instant search results, and no spam or fakes. -Ed -- You! Well, you got it wrong. xorg.conf doesn't override /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf - it's /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf that does. The whole file gets overridden. That's why the recommendation is to *copy* the 10-nvidia.conf over and edit it in the /etc hierarchy. On a different note I should check out the Coolbits setting. From your and Robby's email to this list, my interpretation was that anything in /etc/X11/ will override /usr/share/X11, but maybe I understood that wrong? Or is it just that /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d overrides /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d? What I observe is that anything in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d has priority. There seems to be conflicting information after googling about this. The X.org docs seem to imply that /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d is searched LAST so that word give it priority? Others say that /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d is search first and so has lower priority? Acccording to http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2010-April/006852.html In addition to the conf files found in /etc/X11 or $sysconfdir/X11 used for local administration, we also reserve a system directory for vendor and package usage. The simple search path is: /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d $datadir/X11/xorg.conf.d Files from these directories will have the lowest config priority. So you can understand my confusion. BTW, emmel, check the driver readme for a bunch of coolbits settings, depending on the card. The fan one is nice as I can drop the decibels unless I am playing a game. -Ed -- You! It's a bit difficult to help with so few details about your system and what you did to build the new R. I can tell you that I did this same upgrade today on a Slackware 13.37 x86_64 system, downloading and building the package from slackbuilds.org with sbopkg, and R 2.13.1 works fine, and the R executable is in /usr/bin, where you'd expect it to be. > > Any ideas- To try to help you, I'd be interested in knowing the architecture and version of the Slackware system you are running and seeing the result of ls -l /var/adm/packages/R* cat /var/adm/packages/R-2.13.1* hash and echo $PATH from the instance of bash giving you the error would be useful. /Don Allen > > Rich > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > SlackBuilds-users mailing list > SlackBuilds-users at slackbuilds.org > http://lists.slackbuilds.org/mailman/listinfo/slackbuilds-users > Archives - http://lists.slackbuilds.org/pipermail/slackbuilds-users/ > FAQ - http://slackbuilds.org/faq/ > > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For some reason I aliased R to look in /usr/local/bin. Since I installed R from the SBo packages over the past few years I've no idea why I did this nor do I know why R ran (from /usr/bin) until today. I am suitably embarrassed. Mea culpa! Well, you should be; no one else has ever done anything that dumb before, certainly not me :-) (Believe me, I really am kidding!) For years, I've talked about writing a book about the various strange and wonderful ways we screw ourselves with computers (not a particularly original idea). If you can stand a war story, 35+ years ago, I worked on and later ran the Tenex project at BBN. BBN was one of the key companies that built the ARPAnet (the predecessor of the Internet) and Tenex, an operating system developed by us for the DEC PDP-10, was the most common host OS on the network. One of the guys in the Tenex group wrote a backup and archiving system. The first time he ran it in production, it archived its own executable and source files. Archived files could only be read by the archiving program. Me: So should be no problem -- you have a copy of all that stuff on DECTape, right? Him: Um, no. /Don > > Mea culpa! > > Rich > _______________________________________________ > SlackBuilds-users mailing list > SlackBuilds-users at slackbuilds.org > http://lists.slackbuilds.org/mailman/listinfo/slackbuilds-users > Archives - http://lists.slackbuilds.org/pipermail/slackbuilds-users/ > FAQ - http://slackbuilds.org/faq/ > > From the_emmel at gmx.net Tue Aug 30 10:55:17 2011 From: the_emmel at gmx.net (emmel) Date: Tue, 30 Aug 2011 12:55:17 +0200 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] nvidia-kernel In-Reply-To: References: <20110828081750.GA2341@pollux.mlnet> <20110829081155.GA2190@pollux.mlnet> Message-ID: <20110830105517.GB2809@pollux.mlnet> On Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 11:48:06AM -0700, King Beowulf wrote: > Emmel, see LQ thread I stgarted to get more exposure on this topic. After some searching. I have no idea where the part with xorg.conf overrides everything comes from. I've never actually tried to put any static configuration in the config dirs. But, and let me say that very clearly: The xorg.conf doesn't matter to your package. Although it would be nice to know if xorg.conf settings do override. From my (hard learned) hot plugging lessons, I can however attast to the following: Hot plugged stuff completely ignores the xorg.conf, unless you disable hotplugging entirely in the xorg.cong. I wouldn't be too surprised if you see something similar, even though graphics cards usually aren't hot plugged in the traditional sense. Anyway, after copying the settings file in question from /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, any the letter would take precedece. And this *is* the preferred way to deal with those configurations. Have a look at the comments in 90-keyboard-layout.conf. Oh, just had a look. It actually seems that not the whole file gets overridden, but the sections therein. My custom keymap file is just called keymap.conf... Long story made short: In our specific case, putting the Coolbits setting in a copied settings file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d should work and be the way to go. You jsut supply the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d file. Users should not adjust their xorg.conf, but the copy in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d. Huh. Lots of typing, not so much content. Hope this helps matters, though. On a different note, activating the Coolbits option gives me the option to change the fan settings, but not the clock. Odd. Hi Roland, As you have found, xtrkcad was removed from SBo because an important dependency (libgtkhtml) became obsolete and was removed from Slackware a long time ago [*]. However, I kept a copy of the xtrkcad SlackBuild, and also I modified Pat's libgtkhtml SlackBuild to conform to SBo standards. You can get them from my Github repo: libgtkhtml: https://raw.github.com/idlemoor/SBo-fork/fork/Unmaintained/libgtkhtml/README https://raw.github.com/idlemoor/SBo-fork/fork/Unmaintained/libgtkhtml/libgtkhtml.SlackBuild https://raw.github.com/idlemoor/SBo-fork/fork/Unmaintained/libgtkhtml/libgtkhtml.info https://raw.github.com/idlemoor/SBo-fork/fork/Unmaintained/libgtkhtml/slack-desc xtrkcad: https://raw.github.com/idlemoor/SBo-fork/fork/Unmaintained/xtrkcad/README https://raw.github.com/idlemoor/SBo-fork/fork/Unmaintained/xtrkcad/slack-desc https://raw.github.com/idlemoor/SBo-fork/fork/Unmaintained/xtrkcad/xtrkcad.SlackBuild https://raw.github.com/idlemoor/SBo-fork/fork/Unmaintained/xtrkcad/xtrkcad.info I hope they work for you. It's a big surprise that someone cares about xtrkcad -- maybe I should submit an update for jmri too... Regards -D. [*] There was some discussion, a long time ago, about rewriting xtrkcad to use something else (gtkhtml3 or webkit) but apparently that still hasn't happened. That's what get for using gmail web client... I sent in a diff to fix nvidia-kernel up a bit. I did see the comments in 90-keyboard-layout.conf and was hoping 10-nvidia.conf would behave the same way. No such luck here. Its a small niggle, but I do want a simple default that can be tweaked in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d as needed. I can't seem to get it to work. -- You!
