I mainly do this for myself, but I also have them available for other users via my blog. I recently got asked from an LQ user if I ever considered submitting these scripts to SBo. So, I wanted to ask: a) Given the fact that these scripts rely on commercial and (usually) proprietary software and would appeal only to Humble Bundle customers, would these scripts be welcome by SBo? b) If yes, do you think it would actually be a worthy addition to the database? Because, currently, there are scripts for 43 games and I suspect I'll have to modify them to be as consistent as possible with SBo's templates. Regards, Dimitris PS. The potential problem I see here is (un)availability of source (or binary in this case) tarballs to everybody, and that includes SBo admins wanting to test your build scripts against those tarballs. If these games can be downloaded freely and only require some sort of activation to play, then the fact that they're commercial software shouldn't be an issue. I believe SBo already contains SlackBuilds for this sort of software, although I don't have any examples to point you at. > b) If yes, do you think it would actually be a worthy addition to > the database? The issue, which has already been mentioned, is going to be the lack of direct download links. This makes approval impossible. I suspect (I could be wrong) that I am the only admin to own all of the bundles. I have no interest in being the one to approve all these scripts. I think it would be best if they were maintained separately from SBo. As a side note, I haven't found any of the games to require system-wide installation. They all live happily under ~/humble/ for me. -- Erik Hanson From klaatu at straightedgelinux.com Thu Jun 7 21:13:56 2012 From: klaatu at straightedgelinux.com (Klaatu) Date: Thu, 7 Jun 2012 17:13:56 -0400 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] SlackBuilds for Humble Bundle games In-Reply-To: <20120607155822.782919f7@shaggy.doo> References: <4FD1CEE0.6070402@otenet.gr> <20120607155822.782919f7@shaggy.doo> Message-ID: <201206071713.56830.klaatu@straightedgelinux.com> > On Fri, 08 Jun 2012 13:07:28 +0300 > > Dimitris Tsagkatakis wrote: > > Hi there, > > > > I currently maintain SlackBuilds for games from the Humble Bundle > > series. They all live happily under ~/humble/ for me. Just a humble suggestion, Dimistris: I tried to wget -m the folder containing your build scripts and dropbox laughed at me. I tried a few other tricks to download all the scripts so I wouldn't have to click 43 times to get them all, and just could not. So if you do continue to maintain them separately, maybe it would be nice to zip them all up into one archive? I imagine the collection would only end up being a few megabytes; well worth it for one-click convenience. I had some complains about a build I had a while back which I did not update - but the Slackware version of the libraries did not allow a newer version to be built. Since we are always tracking the latest stable Slackware release, it would not work to update. Often the maintainer knows something one does not think of. Actually, SBo admins: Would it be possible to submit a patch to the Slackbuild which was simply a modification of the README to indicate that an application is not updated until next Slackware release, because newer releases of the application will not work with Slackware at the moment? I'm quite positive, however, it's not the case here. I've been using an updated version on a number of machines for close to a year without any problems. My proposal is using Git for all the steps in SlackBuild scripts management. Think about how Linus manages git repositories for Linux kernel sources. IIRC, the workflow of submitting scripts remains unchanged from the beginning of the project. Can't deny that it's fundamental and reliable. I do know Slackware fellows always keep thing as simple as possible. And I guess I countered myself. :-P Is it just me or are some guys feeling that this workflow is inconvenient, inefficient, on both submitter side and admin side. I'm not going to take examples at this time, maybe you have been thinking about it. It seems that pull requests are considered fine for minor corrections. While using pull requests for submissions and updates would certainly be more convenient for those of us who already maintian our scripts under git anyways, it would probably be less convenient for anyone who doesn't. The other reason the admins probably want to continue using the submission form is becaues of the additional information/fields in that form. Trying to force people to use a consistent pattern in their commit messages would probably be a pain in the ass (or maybe just requires some hooks?) but giving them a web form to fill out is comparatively easy. I don't know how exactly the workflow works on the admin side, but I expect that any solution would need to prioritize makeing their work easier. They do have to do far more work than any individual submitter/maintainer so we should really be optimizing for their work load. They're probably both *unable* AND *unwilling* to fix it. But the silver lining is that this is a great opportunity for you to use your own Slackware machine as your Mail Exchanger if you've got a nailed up connection. Alternatively, you can certainly go to hostmonster and change your MX records to a different set of mail servers, and create A RRs for them too that will route all of your SMTP traffic through a more sane provider. That won't affect your webhosting at all. I've done this for a lot of companies once they actually got into branding themselves and figuring out that what most of these providers (hostmonster included) rather expect people to have a website while placing gmail or socal.rr.com or other email addy's on their business cards. Personally, aside from gmail (and only because of the level of legitimate critical mass it commands), I abhor DEAs, and MaxMind loves to flag new users with such DEAs as possibly fraudulent transactions/signups too. There have been several releases of Angband since. I would like to take over the build, or someone else can. I am trying to make a new Moria SlackBuild. However, I do not quite understand the commands in the template that installs the man page, and the Moria source is different. The man page is contained in 'doc' along with all other documentation. Is there anything that needs to be done but changing the folder that 'find' looks for, or would only doing so also install all the other docs in the system's man folders? --David Melik _____________________________________________________________ Find out what's HIP!
