Thanks for the response.  You are very probably correct, although I am 
only worring aboiut 96.x, 173.x and the current long term support release.

Nvidia-legacy-173 seems to still update both the driver and the 
utilities.  For Nvidia-legacy-96, they are not, though I have to see if 
the version in the binary blob payload is the same or different from the 
available source.  Unfortunately, other that compile, I have to way of 
testing.  My current Nvidia GPU is too new, and both my old Geforce4 and 
7600 are toast.  Heck, I don't even have a functional AGP motherboard 
anymore even if the cards still worked.
