Second, there are some missing utilities that are built but not installed by the slackbuild -- I found this when trying to play with the markov modes. This is actually a problem that exists with Jumbo 5 as well. The attached patch works for me. Thanks! Kent. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <20130414194548.74a2f957@beer.bong> Hi gang, I tried to get all the dependencies installed on a friends 13.37 system in preperation of installing HandBrake. The reason I downloaded all of them and burned them onto a cd-rw and took it to him is he has only dial-up and is unfortunately constrained to being able to use it only from ~midnight through ~6AM. Naturally he has other things he'd also like to do so I do a lot of downloading for him. The problem: We got everything installed and when we go to build HandBrake, it wants to download and install *all* the dependencies on its list - whether they're already installed on the system or not! This is a PITA for dial-up users. I looked at the Slackbuild for HandBrake, but didn't see anything in it that's making it do the downloading, and unfortunately am not a programmer so can't figure out where else this set of instructions is other than the HandBrake tarball itself somewhere. Does anyone know what I can possibly do to install HandBrake on my bud's system without having to go through the whole download and install thing? Thanks for all and any help with this one. -- "The Constitution was handed down to guide us by a bunch of wise old dead white guys who invented our country! Now some flinch when I say that. Why! Build handbrake on your own system, burn the .tgz package on CD, install that on his system with installpkg. You don't need to install the dependencies. You need to make sure you have ALL of the files listed in the HandBrake.info file in the same directory as the HandBrake.Slackbuild file. They will be copied into place by the SlackBuild which will prevent the build process from auto-downloading everything. -- Erik Hanson -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... The kqemu is only needed for older versions of qemu for better performance or older processors that don't have VT (I believe) built into them so that either kvm-intel/kvm-amd modules are loaded. So, if you're building the latest version of qemu, you should not have to worry about kqemu unless your processor doesn't support it. To test if you have VT capabilities the run the following # grep '(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo If there isn't any output then your processor doesn't support KVM and you will need kqemu for better performance. --Larry On Mon, Apr 15, 2013 at 4:29 AM, Sebastian Arcus wrote: > I've just spent an hour trying to get my head around to what is the > difference between qemu and qemu-kvm and which one do I need. You will also need an ancient version of qemu, specifically the one built by http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14.0/system/qemu-legacy/ If there's still mention of kqemu in the qemu README, that's a bug in the README (kqemu support was removed after qemu 0.11.1). Plus I'm pretty sure that it's not possible to build kqemu on modern (3.x) linux kernels. At least, there's no kqemu SlackBuild for Slack 14.0, and the one for 13.37 fails to build on Slack 14... if that's the case, the qemu-legacy package on 14.0 is also pointless I think. Thanks B Watson, Thorsten and Larry. Those were pretty much my conclusions after fumbling around. What I was trying to hint was if it is possible to remove redundant packages, and update the description of the current ones on SBo for anybody who might follow the same route as me and be confused as to the applicability of those packages and descriptions. Also - I can't seem to find a a definite answer anywhere - is it still possible to run the current qemu on a processor without the virtualization extensions at all? Will it just not use kvm - but still be able to run the same virtual machine (just slower)? Just wondering if the following line is still necessary in the description: "qemu-kvm achieves near native performances by leveraging the kvm-kmod modules and executing the guest code directly on the host CPU." Since qemu-kvm was the name of the old fork which is not relevant now - and any web searches will lead to those pages, would a rephrasing such as "When using kvm, qemu achieves near native ..." be a bit clearer? Also, the kvm-kmod package description still makes reference to the qemu-kvm package - specially the first paragraph. Since the new build says that it isn't enabled automatically anymore in mozilla, it isn't even there in the plugins to enable or disable. I want to know how to make it be there at all, like it used to be, so I *can* enable or disable it as I wish/need. I downloaded the jdk from slackbuilds.org (jdk7u17) and built it and did an 'upgradepkg'. Now I don't see 'java' anything in the tools/add-ons tabs anywhere. -- "The Constitution was handed down to guide us by a bunch of wise old dead white guys who invented our country! When any kind of 'oops' or malfunction or vulnerability happens in important (and often non-important) linux apps/libs/kernel/whatever, doesn't someone who works on that particular 'whatever' get on it as soon as possible and have a 'fix' out - as soon as possible? I've seen it happen for the past 13 years. How can the Java team fixing things as quickly and as often as necessary be such a wrong thing to be derided? -- "Americans [have] the right and advantage of being armed, unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust their people with arms." -James Madison From ronayne.thomas at gmail.com Wed Apr 17 13:48:16 2013 From: ronayne.thomas at gmail.com (Thomas Ronayne) Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2013 09:48:16 -0400 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] The latest jdk on slackbuilds.org In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <516EA820.1030504@gmail.com> I can only reiterate the warning found in US-CERT TA13-064A (see Alert (TA13-064A) Oracle Java Contains Multiple Vulnerabilities ), which is talking about Java 7 Update 17 (7u17); down a ways is the following: *"Disable Java in Web Browsers* This and previous Java vulnerabilities have been widely targeted by attackers, and new Java vulnerabilities are likely to be discovered. To defend against these vulnerabilities, consider disabling Java in web browsers until adequate updates are available. As with any software, unnecessary features should be disabled or removed as appropriate for your environment. Starting with Java 7 Update 10, it is possible to disable Java content in web browsers through the Java control panel applet. According to Setting the Security Level of the Java Client , For installations where the highest level of security is required, it is possible to entirely prevent /any/ Java apps (signed or unsigned) from running in a browser by de-selecting Enable Java content in the browser in the Java Control Panel under the Security tab. If you are unable to update to Java 7 Update 10, see the solution section of Vulnerability Note VU#636312 for instructions on how to disable Java on a per-browser basis." Given that Oracle updated in less than 24 hours to 21, and given the known problems, disabling the Java plug-in in every browser you use is a Real Good Idea. Bradly's comment about Swiss cheese is, I think, not harsh enough -- Oracle's stewardship is more along the lines of Microsoft's: you can drive a semi in, turn it around, load up with whatever you want then drive off. It would not be a bad idea in any event to subscribe to US-CERT ; down at the bottom of the page you can subscribe to Alerts which are periodically issued when Bad Things Are Afoot. You can also review Bulletins and Tips (and subscribe too for those). If you really want (or must) have the Java plug-in your browsers, that's pretty easy: simply make a symbolic link in /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins to /usr/lib64/java/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so (assuming you've installed JDK, which includes JRE) using the SlackBuild from the extra directory on your Slackware media -- the file you want to link to is libnpjp2.so. Of course, if you're using 32-bit, the "64" won't be there but otherwise the file is the same name. This is one of those don't do it unless you really know what the consequences may be kind of things, just be aware of that. And, if you do this, disable the damned thing in the browser unless you must have it for some reason. Hope this helps some. About things being fixed/not fixed it's better if you refer to Oracle's developers, we simply offer a repackaging of their binary: for what I've read security experts say that it's a because of a wrong architectural design for java and that the only way to fix it would be to rewrite it from scratch (I personally wouldn't wait for it). Oracle have been trying to block all paths to that weakness, as the real fix is to break today java apps. Of course, its a chase (and losing) battle and so loading unknown java is today always a risk. yet, like me, many people must have java installed in the browser because of work tools or government sites. > Since this thread has been happening, I've become so paranoid about > java that I'm scared to click on the "Test the version of Java your > browser is using" link on that page. Its clearly going to exercise my Fear not! :) The browsers can help on this mess. Chrome/chrommium can ask before running java. Firefox is finishing a entry to enable each plugin on each site... but until then use the about:permissions to setup the plugin to "ask" and only enable java (click to play) on the sites you really need. As a side effect you get the firefox native flashblock. So you need not to have java or any plugin enable by default, set to ask and enable it where you need it good luck! higuita -- Naturally the common people don't want war... but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. There is, and there isn't. Like Niels mentioned, there isn't a list per se', because we don't *maintain* any packages - just the scripts here. You have to d/l the source yourself. If there are security issues, then the responsibility is upon you, as the administrator, to follow progress with the upstream developers, since it is there where one would find (if it exists), the security lists or announcement methods that pertain to that/those particular software package[s]. That having been said, there is a vehicle for maintaining the software you install via the Slackbuilds site - much along the lines of how slackpkg keeps your Slackware machine updated with the latest releases from the oficial stable Slackware releases. That vehicle is called *sbopkg*, and you can d/l it at http://sbopkg.org Once installed, it syncs with the SBo repo and you can check for updates whenever you choose. When there are new releases of the software you have installed, the SBo scripts are updated here as well (in a reasonable amount of time). When that happens, sbopkg will inform you of the new releases and offer you the opportunity to install it. Beyond that, there are also queuefiles, which is a pretty comprehensive endeavor to resolve dependencies via the SBo repo. For that, there are a couple of options, but perhaps the newest one that has been working for most folks is the one by Chess Griffen here: https://code.google.com/p/sbopkg/source/browse/trunk/src/usr/doc/contrib/sqg I haven't personally used sqg myself. It's basically a helper for the manual way that I still tend to install queuefile support - in the following manner: # cd /var/lib/sbopkg # git clone git://gitorious.org/sbopkg-slackware-queues/sbopkg-slackware-queues.git queues # sbopkg -i .sqf -k To keep it up to date, you occasionally should: # cd /var/lib/sbopkg/queues # git pull But sqg should handle all of that for you :) There are also numerous other news articles and Slackware related items that are regularly shared with everyone at the Google Plus Slackware Linux Community here: https://plus.google.com/communities/104043194426129544738 - including discussions about Enlightenment and Mate for Slackware and sqg too. To follow a little bit on the development end of sqg, see this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/sqg-sbopkg-queuefile-generator-4175451646/ And don't forget about http://docs.slackware.com either. Welcome to SBo Alain, it took you long enough to get here ;) I hope that helps! Kindest regards, - -- Bradley D. I wrote to them both because Larry had orphaned this script (among the others) and Vincent claimed[*] it, but this happened on 2011-10-24, and since then there were no updates to the script, while virtualenv itself had numerous releases. In other words, I wasn't sure who was the current maintainer. Larry replied that he indeed is not the maintainer anymore. Unfortunately, I haven't heard from Vincent at all (I sent the email to his hashbangbash.com address), perhaps he was busy with life at that time and simply forgot to reply later, or maybe my email was eaten by a grue while on its way to Vincent, who knows what really happened. So I'm trying again, this time to this mailing list. If Vincent isn't interested anymore, I'll gladly take over the script. In November 2012 lighttpd 1.4.32 was released, containing a fix for a critical bug. The SlackBuild, however, is still at 1.4.31. The SlackBuild for nginx is still at 1.2.26 (December 2012), having missed numerous bugfixes from two more stable releases in the 1.2-branch (superseeded by the new stable 1.4 a few days ago). I've tried contacting the respective maintainers but haven't received a reply yet (considering the eagerness of Google's spam filter I'm not sure if they even got my mails). -- From khinch at nylonmoon.com Tue Apr 30 20:37:41 2013 From: khinch at nylonmoon.com (khinch at nylonmoon.com) Date: Tue, 30 Apr 2013 21:37:41 +0100 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] perl-Test-Inter 1.03 - Source Code No Longer Available (Slackware 14.0) Message-ID: Hi, RE: perl-Test-Inter 1.03 The source code for perl-Test-Inter (http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14.0/perl/perl-Test-Inter/) is no longer available at the URL listed in the slackbuild. I have contacted the maintainer (Vyacheslav Stetskevych) who has informed me he is no longer responsible for this package. The most recent source code is 1.05. I have tested the build by simply changing all instances of 1.03 to 1.05 and it works fine. I have so far refrained from submitting this as a new slackbuild simply because I lack explicit permission from the maintainer. Kind regards, Kieren Hinch
