Hello everyone,
The NEWS files have been renamed in R 3.0.2:
"CHANGES IN R 3.0.2:
NEW FEATURES:
     * The NEWS files have been re-organized.

       This file contains news for R >= 3.0.0: news for the 0.x.y, 1.x.y
       and 2.x.y releases is in files NEWS.0, NEWS.1 and NEWS.2.  The
       latter files are now installed when R is installed.  An HTML
       version of news from 2.10.0 to 2.15.3 is available as
       doc/html/NEWS.2.html."

You will need to modify line 105 of the R.SlackBuild-script to:
tar cfJ $PKG/usr/doc/$PRGNAM-$VERSION/OLDER_NEWS.txz NEWS.0 NEWS.1 NEWS.2
