eww indeed, well they know they got it wrong but don't seem much in a hurry
to fix it. As I said there is a patch for 0.98.4rc1 that works well, and
0.98.4 is only a bugfix release.
As for the possible fixes, your "last resort" one is the only one that will
work on this one. as they have split the configure script in loads of
little bits.
Personally I have just not installed it and kept the old package. The
signatures are still being updated so I don't care too much.
