If the consensus > is that it should be enable by default, let me know. From the limited response, consensus doesn't seem strong either way. I'd prefer that vnc support is left enabled. I personally use qemu with vnc quite a lot and, in building the new Slackbuild, it was easy enough to set VNC_ENABLE to on. However, a quick look over the qemu configure file seems to indicate that vnc is enabled by default already i.e. the only reason I now need to intervene to enable the vnc option is because the Slackbuild contains additional lines to disable it. Surely this contravenes an often quoted tenet of the Slackware way, namely to prefer unadulterated upstream code over local/distro-specific modifications. If anything, the Slackbuild should default VNC_ENABLE to yes, rather than no; then minimalists can choose to turn it off if they want to. Like many other things, the fact that something is available or legal doesn't mandate its use. The fact that qemu is built with vnc support (as intended) doesn't mean everyone or anyone has to use it. It would be much more utilitarian (and dare I say Slackware-esque) to let it be. chris From rworkman at slackbuilds.org Mon May 5 05:45:21 2014 From: rworkman at slackbuilds.org (Robby Workman) Date: Mon, 5 May 2014 00:45:21 -0500 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] QEMU slackbuild typo fix In-Reply-To: <5366FF15.7020809@gmail.com> References: <5366FF15.7020809@gmail.com> Message-ID: <20140505004521.36e254ea@home.rlworkman.net> On Sun, 04 May 2014 20:01:41 -0700 King Beowulf wrote: > Admins, > Thanks to sandb0y for the corrections. It's worth mentioning that while you're correct that Java 8 is available, a short FAQ[1] on it says in part: The new release of Java is first made available to developers to ensure no major problems are found before we make it available on the java.com website for end users to download. So unless you're specifically testing Java 8, Oracle recommends that you continue to use Java 7--and if you go to http://java.com and try to download it, the version it offers you is 7u55. This is what's in the SlackBuild. Heinz, Thank you. I modified the SlackBuild script to call python3 as I have python3-3.4 installed and will use that for this new application I'm developing. Python-2.7.5 is also installed but I might as well learn python3 for all new applications. I also learned that my /tmp partition, at 1.9G, ran out of room while building wxPython-3. Took me a while to get that cleaned up since every command wants to write a temporary file there. Whew! I changed $TMP to a subdirectory in ~/ which has >100G available. Interesting idea, but I am not sure the data would be useful. For example: sbopkg: pulls in the whole thing. Even if like me, you only ever use a handful of packages from slackbuilds.org, you have ALL the scripts. Maybe a better set of statistics would be to implement this on the sbopkg side: have sbopkg phone home somewhere for every package successfully built. That is unSlackwarian, the idea of software which phones home, but surely they would have it as an opt-in feature default to "no". > (And at the end of every month, it could send a virtual pat on > the back containing the d/l stats to each of the maintainers ;-) > > Of course, as someone who doesn't work on the web site, that's > easy for me to say. -- Rob McGee - /dev/rob0 - rob0 at slackbuilds.org From thomasrling at gmail.com Tue May 13 14:49:36 2014 From: thomasrling at gmail.com (Thomas) Date: Tue, 13 May 2014 10:49:36 -0400 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] gnome-inform7: Request update to build 6L02 Message-ID: Requesting an update of gnome-inform7 SlackBuild to version 6L02 released about a week ago. Still wouldn't be all that accurate. I bet I'm not the only one that uses an rsync mirror + own custom scripts to build/install stuff. Also there's sbo_tools... > That is unSlackwarian, the idea of software which phones home, but > surely they would have it as an opt-in feature default to "no". I bet most people would leave it disabled, too. I'm against this, but... if I were for it, I'd say the place to implement it would be a wrapper around installpkg: a script that runs installpkg, and if it succeeds, and if the package had a _SBo tag, it hits the counter URL with wget or curl. This would be *very* opt-in: the user would have to do something like rename /sbin/installpkg to /sbin/installpkg.orig, then place the tracking script at /sbin/installpkg. Again though, I bet very few of us would opt in. I'd vote for "leave it enabled" (and don't even make it an option) for the following reasons: - It's the default. - It doesn't introduce any additional dependencies or links to heavyweight libs. - No extra step needed if you need vnc. - No extra step needed if you don't need vnc, either. If you don't want it, just don't make it your "-display" when you start the VM. IMHO vnc is quite handy even for local use. I'm trying to use it on Slack64 14.1, here's what happens: Starting Ted from the command line, either "Ted" by itself or "Ted filename.rtf" where filename.rtf already exists, I get the main Ted logo window for a split second, then it sits there forever (well, I kill -9'ed it after 15 minutes). Starting "Ted nosuchfile.rtf" where nosuchfile.rtf doesn't exist, actually works fine (I can edit and save the file). But only for files that don't already exist. The Ted man page says "It can take a minute to start - before the Ted window appears on the display - because Ted polls the system printers", but surely there's something else going on here. I contacted the SBo maintainer for Ted, he says he's no longer using Slackware. I might take this package, but would rather not (I need to read RTF files maybe once every 3 or 4 years), if someone who uses it regularly would step up... I tested on 2 different 64-bit 14.1 installs and a 32-bit 14.1. All the other window managers (fluxbox, blackbox, twm, fvwm2, and even xfce) display the Ted window just fine. With windowmaker it fails the same way on all three machines (one of which is a fresh install). Also got someone on IRC to try it, and he had identical results. Also tried building Ted-2.23, and got identical results from it, too. > if you want to takeover, i would suggest to include libpaper as one of > it's DEPS I may come back to this someday, but for now I'm done messing with Ted. I needed it for viewing a handful of RTF docs someone sent me last week, which turned out to be bogus information anyway (supposed to be chord charts, but instead they were lyric sheets without chords). Before that I last needed an RTF viewer in... 2001 maybe? If you're willing to do it, it might be nice to add "Note: This application doesn't work with Windowmaker" to its README. Or maybe there should be a fonts/ category? I would favor having them all in the same category, whatever it be, where we could find the font themselves (bitmaps and scalable alike) as well as associated tools like: fontforge (now in graphics) fontmatrix (now in graphics) perl-fontAFM (now in perl - moving that one is debatable, maybe we could associate more than one category to a given software :-) fgtm (now in libraries, same remark) gndfed (now in graphics) mftrace (now in graphics) psftools (now in graphics) t1utils (now in graphics) Also, I'd add to your list of fonts not in system: Adobe-reader-fontpacks (now in office) It's of course up to the admins to create a new category. I'd favor having one for the fonts and associated tools (O probably forgot to list some) if feasible and maintainable. Yah... there could be some guidelines, like: packages that are just fonts should include -font or -fonts in their package name, something like that. Not sure anyone wants to try & enforce that much order, though. FWIW I don't feel strongly about these categories; at best they can only be a rough guide. I have a different view of what "system" means (or should mean.) X11 is a display system, basically a thing to draw pictures for a user. It is by no means essential to a GNU/Linux computer. Fonts comprise a subset of X11, to fool the user into thinking that a picture is in fact painting a thousand words. I'd call "system" a place for things like filesystem drivers and tools, disk management utilities, and OS and package management software. I could poke through /sbin, /usr/sbin, Unix manual's section 8, and Slackware's A series to find a few more examples. Fonts might more properly fit into "office" or "desktop" IMO. If enough of them are packaged, a "fonts" category makes sense. Jm2cw. Thanks for the response for now, they are placed in a single category (system) which makes it easier to manage and find since the majority of font packages are in system already. And let not forget that all true type font are perfectly usable as console fonts through an fbterm, with and without a frame buffer, so their usage is not restricted to desktop or windows managers, let alone office applications. And of course a build material for fbterm is available @ slackbuilds.org, thanks woody ;) So yes, a 'fonts' category makes sense (that would include related tools, as already mentioned).
