Not magic. Read the SlackBuild:
http://taper.alienbase.nl/mirrors/people/alien/slackbuilds/steamclient/build/steamclient.SlackBuild
It adds some parameters to the steam executable, exporting the
SDL_AUDIODRIVER to use ALSA. The SBo version should probably do the same.
