Without looking at the script (so this is just a general observation), you
don't necessarily have to do it that way. Your script could autodetect
whether po4a is installed, and set whatever options are needed for
fakeroot's configure or whatever it uses.

And, in case the autodetection is somehow broken someday, or getting in
someone's way, you could add a MANPO=no setting to disable it and skip
po4a entirely.

Whatever po4a actually is, I mean :)
