I think you are right:

Rich, in your buid log I see:

/usr/bin/perl: symbol lookup error: /usr/local/lib/perl5/auto/List/Util/Util.so: undefined symbol: Perl_xs_apiversion_bootcheck

How come is this perl shared object in /usr/local?

If you installed a genuine perl5 package you shoul5 have it in /usr/lib:
/usr/lib/perl5/auto/List/Util/Util.so
