Personally, I'll use one to install in /usr/games, but someone said SlackBuilds are starting to install games in /usr/bin (and this is a console game... I'd never put GUI/X stuff in /usr/games, with the exception of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, named crawl, when you also have crawl-ascii next to it.)? I forgot, is that one person's preference, or general rule now? (since I uploaded a few/several this year in which I forgot to make the change, and they weren't modified.)? I made another SlackBuild that installs to /usr/bin, in case. I'd also like some angband testing: I just ran 4.1.0, which said it couldn't create some directory, undocumented (of course, now my SlackBuild creates it) so I don't know what else, that's critical, is undocumented (especially other modes than console, that I don't use.) If only because you can ls /usr/games to quickly see which games are installed on the system :) Like, I don't have a start menu, so I am kind of lost when it comes to browsing 1200+ base install packages, and more "invisible" games is the last thing I would need :) I would symlink them from /usr/bin though of course. The last snapshot from archive.org was 2 JUL 2017. Below are the links to the two options. Can an admin decide what they feel is better and update the package for me? I personally feel that it would be better to keep an English site rather than link to a German one (even if it is an archived page), but I am slightly biased since I speak English and don't speak German. https://web.archive.org/web/20170702004406/http://www.winace.com/ http://winace.de Thanks, Jeremy -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Neither slackware-current nor multilib are supprted @ SBo, if I remember well. That's not to say nobody will help you, but be prepared to encounter additional hurdles and be on your own to jump them. > There is a package installed - speexdsp-1.2rc3-x86_64-1. > Do I have to compile speex package from Slackbuilds as well, or speexdsp and > speex are the same thing? I assume that they are different beasts as the general policy @ SBo is to not ship SlackBuilds for packages already shipped on Slackware. You could compare the source archives to check. > Then - if I compile speex and gsm, do I have to recompile ffmpeg, in order for > it to pick them up? > And finally, when do I compile the pjproject-ring package (after compiling > speex, gsm and ffmpeg, or it can be compiled independently)? Generally speaking you should draw the dependencies tree reading the READMEs. In this specific case it seems that that all deps can be built independently (including deps of deps), but again this could differ with Slackware-current. The README mentions no deps for pproject-ring, so I would assume that it can be compiled independently. Whether you have to recompile ffmpeg could depend on the options used in Slackware-current, of which I have no idea. Good luck. Message-ID: <20171006145807.e93a41c7cffe577a3bb2e56e@laposte.net> Hi everybody! well the question is not that philosophical... Dosbox is a nice project, and works quite well, even since the last version is as old as may 2010. It looks quite dead but it wouldn't matter much because it works pretty well as it is. But the truth is the developement is still quite active, and there had been a lot of revisions since 0.74 was out. 0.74 is r3608, and latest is r4055 and is dated from yesterday. I'm not sure about the benefices of updating to the latest SVN revision, but I think there might be some notable improvements, they write about stability, performance, and better game compatibility. So as the maintainer of dosbox, I was wondering if it might be a good idea to change the version for a recent SVN revision. There are a few difficulties of doing so : - 1st. it is hosted on sourceforge, there are no tags, and there is no way of getting a tarball of a specific revision, so I can't make an easy slackbuild with a download URL, a md5sum and say "here goes dosbox-0.74-r4055". Except if I could create such a tarball and host it on slackbuild, which may be a solution. - 2nd. as those are SVN builds, I can't really know which one to choose, what if I choose a broken one ? I guess it might be as simple as updating the saved tarball, and version number, but it doesn't seem to follow the slackware philosophy of having a solid though up-to-date system. I'd go a bit blind there hoping for the best. Maybe I should add a dosbox-svn slackbuild specifically for non-releases versions ? - 3rd. as it would be by definition of unknown stability, it would be best if it were easy for builders to try out a different revision, even the latest at any time, without having to ask me for it, and waiting for a tarball being uploaded, etc. all that without knowing if it would work better. And it is not really hard to simply clone the SVN repository, and update to any given revision, then build a dosbox-0.74.revision package. But is it something we would be doing inside a slackbuild ? And if the slackbuild doest that (svn checkout && svn update -r $revision), there wouldn't be any download links inside the dosbox.info file, how would third party software like sbotools handle that ? - 4th. sourceforge being as shitty as it is, there also isn't a download link available for getting the latest revision. Snapshots are only available for the latest revision, but the revision number is inside the URL, and older snapshots are removed and inaccessible. I could download some sort of dosbox-latest, and extract the revision number, and create a latest package with the right version, which could also mess up with sbotools and the likes (I don't really know). As of now, I have a fonctional slackbuild that get a revision number (4055 by default which is todays latest) that can be overriden by adding REVISION=... on the command line. Then it does a svn checkout && svn update -r $REVISION, and creates a package names dosbox-0.74.r$REVISION. If REVISION=latest is given, it won't update and instead will get the latest revision number from the SVN repository and creates a well formed package with the latest revision number in it. The download link is still the dosbox-0.74 official release from 2010, and is not used. It compiles fine and works well after a few small tests. So, what should I do about all that ? Yth. The .de page, as you say Jeremy, no longer has an effective link to the English page. Thanks for pointing out the problem -D. It's been a quiet week, but still important updates are coming. First, we have libreoffice update which is done in both the binary repackaging and source compilation. texlive is again updated to match the changes in -current. We also have some updates in development, including eclipse, cargo-vendor, atom, google-go-lang (security fix), and nodejs. Note that we have three scripts removed in this batch. Two of them no longer have a valid upstream for both homepage and source. As for dansguardian, we have e2guardian as a replacement. happy slacking!! However, being bit of a purist snob, I don't mind running most old games in their original state. A very long time ago I used http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/ as the Glide OpenGl wrapper in special Win98/2k/XP configurations for Wing Commander III/IV/Propecy. It was spiffy. Why 3dfx support? back when Glide was a hot API, I simply could not afford a voodoo card. When I could finally afford one, 3dFx was dead and many glide games were in the bargain bin or gone. -Ed -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I will keep the dosbox 0.74 as it is (easiest part of the task ^^). I will ask the dev team what is their position about a new release. I will look into those two forks. I will create a dosbox-svn package with sources on slackbuildsdirectlinks. There are two questions remaining now, both about the dosbox-svn package : - Whom do I ask about getting an access to slackbuildsdirectlinks ? - Could I "hide" the possibility, inside the slackbuild, to get the latest SVN which would do svn checkout && svn update, but being very clear about what it does inside the README. As this package would clearly be for people wanting to experiment different SVN builds. This would absolutely not be the default behavior, but would simplify the task of trying out a different SVN build for any Slackware user. Thanks again ! Yth. > Keep the DosBox SlackBuild at 0.74. Could we modify the following line in the package description: "A sample cron job script is included in the package docs" to "A sample cron job script is included in the package docs - but it needs modifying to work with Slackware". I'm not a user of jalview and have no idea about its value, but if you would like to keep it, maybe it's possible to create a new SlackBuild for the old version of p7zip, such SlackBuild will require no maintaining. He confirmed that the tarballs hadn't been willingly tampered with, and signed them anew. Elements making me think I have probably talked to the real developer: 1. he decrypted my email, encrypted to his public key; 2. he replied as channel operator of #tinyproxy on irc.freenode.net; 3. he was able to reupload new signatures to GitHub. Most mirrors will also mirror deletions of files, but some (most notably BackPAN) keep permanent records of all files ever uploaded to PAUSE. If you really need Astro-Suntime 0.01, it can be found here: http://backpan.cpantesters.org/authors/id/R/RO/ROBF/Astro-SunTime-0.01.tar.gz although using a version that's currently on the main PAUSE server instead is a better idea, because the deletion of an old tarball usually indicates that (a) the old version is very old indeed, (b) there's a nasty bug in the old version that's been fixed in a more recent version, and/or (c) the author is no longer willing to maintain the old version for whatever reason. I think I've said this before, but it might be worth using BackPAN (or MetaCPAN, which has the same archive-forever policy as BackPAN with the added advantage of being available over HTTPS) as the source URL for all Perl modules, to stop this from happening. And while we are at it, Monit seems to be hardwired to use /etc/monitrc config file, instead of /etc/monit.conf. So although it is possible to start it with: monit -c /etc/monit.conf the config file will have to be passed on the command line every time when doing "monit status" - otherwise it doesn't work. Would it be possible to have the default config file at /etc/monitrc, so that "monit status" just works? I think /etc/monit.conf looks better, but it is a pain to type the location of the config file every time you want to get the status of the daemon. I didn't realise that sbocheck pulled the 14.1 tree on the machine I am on (because it has 14.1 on it) - and thus I was looking at old Monit SBo scripts. The current version is fine. My bad. However, any changes in rc.4 would be overwritten by an upgrade - and I just noticed that rc.4 already provides an option for running your own stuff from an rc.4.local - which would be immune to upgrades. The code in rc.4.local would run before all other login managers - so it seems perfect for the task. Could the instructions included in README.SLACKWARE be amended accordingly please?
