Confirmed, I get the same result. Looks like it's been broken since
2012...?

The build has multiple issues. Plus, fbpic itself is pretty useless:
it displays only PPM images, and only on consoles with 16bpp
colordepth (24bpp and 32bpp have been standard for ages now).

For displaying images on a framebuffer, you might try fbida or
fbv. Both support multiple file formats (e.g. jpg, png, gif) and both
support modern 32bpp framebuffers.
