Sorry, I do. A user who installs a package isn't going to compile it
manually. Or, if he decides to, he's going to start by extracting the
source (and can find the INSTALL there).

Yes, and most if not all of them, you wouldn't miss them if they
were gone. Just because something is commonly done doesn't mean it
necessarily should be.
