It was actually the audacious package that can't be run on the command
line using the -H option which is supposed to run it headless and my
understanding of headless means it runs in text without need of $DISPLAY
or dbus or X and that package can't do it so I use mpv rather than
audacious.  Sorry for the confusion about audacity coffee time is at least
another 8 hours in the future.
