Thanks very much for responding.

If, by "clean chroot", you mean no SBo packages at all, I guess I must have
broken something, somewhere, somehow on my system.

I see in 4.01 the pstoedit.1 file is in the distfile, but in 4.3 the
pstoedit.1 file is not in the distfile.

Are you able to tell me what Makefile rule your system used to create
pstoedit.1 ?
