It wasn't me on IRC, but obviously somebody else has noticed. What bugs me is that every time that x265 is upgraded a number of other tools (at least ffmpeg, mplayer, mkvtoolnix) must be rebuilt. Well, at least I have to do so: otherwise, they can't find the target x265 library. Interestingly, mpv does not have to be rebuilt - and it still seems to work fine for me, in that it is able to play everything I throw at it, including material that uses the H.265 HEVC codec.

On Sat, Sep 28, 2024 at 5:11 PM B. Was that you asking on IRC?

If not... apparently mpv has problems with x265 4.0. But, don't know
the details.

It'd be nice if there was a comment in the script explaining *why* it
was downgraded. All we've got is the git log:
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to clone the repo,
do a 'git checkout 585c6dda' (to get the x265 4.0 build). Build
x265, install it, then build/install mpv's deps, then mpv itself.

If it fails to compile, post the build log here.

If it does compile, try using mpv to play a file encoded with the
H.265 HEVC codec, and see if it plays correctly.

Alternatively, if you can't/won't do the work, you could ask Chris
Willing, maintainer of mpv, to take a look at it.

Or you could wait 3 or 4 days, and I'll have time to mess with it
myself. Probably. If I remember to. mpv and x265 aren't my builds, I'm
just the 'repo fixer-upper' whenever I can be.
