Then if it changes to COPYING3, or the LPGL appears (as it has in this case), it's handled already. New features include: * Users can now copy and edit the SlackBuild within the dialog interface, keeping both the original and edited SlackBuild * Build packages using original or edited SlackBuild * Fixes to the permanent build log so it actually works from dialog or cli ;-) * Ability to view/delete the permanent build log within dialog interface * Basic search functionality built in to the dialog interface (shows what category a piece of software is in) * Better viewing of the README, .info, slack-desc, and SlackBuild from cli * Various other cleanups. You can grab the source tarball, noarch package, or view fancy-schmancy screenshots at: http://code.google.com/p/sbopkg Thanks to everybody who sent me fixes, suggestions, tweaks, etc. And continued thanks to the SBo team and contributors for keeping this great resource going. Everything seemed to go fine and work until I tried to 'create and edit a local slackbuild'. Selecting this option takes me to the slackbuild in what looks like nano, but strange things are happening. When I try to type my computer beeps at me then if I keep pushing a key it allows me to type. If I create a line I can't delete it. The most important thing though is that I don't see any way to exit and save my changes. Normally under nano this is a simple ctrl->x, but the normal nano menu is not visible. I tried esc, but there is just no way to escape and save changes and then build the package with these changes. Any suggestions? So, to test, I set root's EDITOR to nano also and it seemed to work fine. I could edit SlackBuilds and the little menu at the bottom was there. Are you doing this as root or regular user? What is the output of 'echo $EDITOR' for the user running sbopkg? I have not tested this on Slackintosh, but I don't see how that could affect things. Well, I went to root tried running EDITOR=/usr/bin/nano but it still defaulted to vi. So I googled and it said to put 'export VISUAL=/usr/bin/nano' into /etc/profile to set nano as the system default. I restarted and it still defaulted to vi. So, I then changed VISUAL to EDITOR in /etc/profile and restarted and whoala it worked. I edited the slackbuild script and built the package successfully. > -- > Chess Griffin > GPG Key: 0x0C7558C3 > http://www.chessgriffin.com > > > _______________________________________________ > Slackbuilds-users mailing list > Slackbuilds-users at slackbuilds.org > http://lists.slackbuilds.org/mailman/listinfo/slackbuilds-users > > Please read the FAQ - http://slackbuilds.org/faq/ > > Thanks for the quick responses and help! Maybe a small blurb about setting the default editor could be added to (for us ignorant newbies :-}, that have no idea how to use vi; or maybe an option in the sbopkg setup that allows you to choose your default editor): http://www.binrev.com/forums/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=5&showentry=54 Any plans to allow automatic installation of packages if someone so desired? Maybe even automatic install that checks to upgradepkg if not then installpkg. Not that's it's real difficult to switch to /tmp and install or upgrade, it would just make it more of a one stop shop that even my Mom could do. Thanks for creating sbopkg! Yeah, my explanation in that last email was vague, sorry. :-) What I usually do on my Slackware systems where I use bash (I generally use zsh) is to have a .bash_profile which then checks for and sources a .bashrc, since .bashrc is a common file where you can put your environmental variables, aliases, prompt setting etc. There's lots of documentation out the about setting environmental variables in your .bashrc or equivalent. > > Thanks for the quick responses and help! The link above is an unofficial howto provided by a user. I can probably clarify the man page about the use of $EDITOR, although I doubt I'll explain how to change it since setting environmental variables is fairly standard stuff. And maybe adding the editor as a config file option is a possibility. > > Any plans to allow automatic installation of packages if someone so > desired? If you look at the SlackBuild scripts included in the source code for Slackware, you'll see that they are without exception meant to be run as root. In some ways, we've simply followed this tradition. In other ways, it's also a lot simpler. When you run a SlackBuild script, you don't have to worry about needing sudo, or entering a password to assume root to complete those things that require superuser privileges. > It's not necessary to do so, but most scripts try to > change the ownership of files to root, so I suspect this is considered > the "slackway". Here's the thing... what rational is there for compiling the software as a user and then assuming root? The only answer I've ever given for this is a blanket "security" answer, but no one is able to elaborate on this. Allow me to do so. I suppose if the source code you are compiling is explicitely or accidentally malicious, the compiling it as a user would save you. Maybe the Makefile will delete all your files if run as root, but that argument falls apart because an attacker could just as easily insert the payload during the make install phase. In short, unless the coders were either stupid or stupid and malicious, there's absolutely no benefit I've ever seen to compiling as a user. Please note however, that this is mitigated by the SBo team auditing and testing each and every SlackBuild script that goes into our repo. I personally run them first as a mortal user and look for any errors, then build them as root, so the likelihood of one of our scripts being malicious is particularly low, though far from impossible (the human element can never be ignored). -- It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, Than for a man to hear the song of fools. Simple, slackers like to live dangerously :) It's historic, based on the way standard slackbuilds work. SBo decided to integrate their slackbuilds with the distro, hence follow similar patterns. The alternative is to build from source, but then you miss out on the standard slack packaging tools, and this may lead to difficulties if the source does odd things to the OS. How would building from source change anything? You'd still have to be root to install the software with a "make install". The rationale for building packages as root is that "make ; make install" is normally done as root as well, so this keeps the package builds close to how a manual build would be done (which is probably the most tested, and therefore reliable, method). Just a note, the majority of the slackbuild.org packages can be built with fakeroot (I've tested it), without being root in any phase of the build. It is a very good tool while I'm testing the build script. There are makefiles, which doesn't handle the DEST (or similar) variables properly and need patching. Using fakeroot, you are 'root' in your directories you can set set the right permissions etc, but you can't write to sytem directories. feco From cesarrd at gmail.com Thu Apr 10 11:42:41 2008 From: cesarrd at gmail.com (Cesar Rodriguez) Date: Thu, 10 Apr 2008 10:42:41 -0500 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] ffmpeg-mksrctarball.sh configures error Message-ID: Hello: I am a new user of slack, since three weeks ago. I found this some days ago but i send this just now because i am a new user in the mailing list so i am not very sure about if i doing the right things. I hope ;). Well i found two things: First: When i try to use the ffmpeg.SlackBuild script of the pkg ffmpeg.tar.gz with the ffmpeg-mksrctarball.sh script, for use the last version and the last version is 20080402, so i changed the VERSION=${VERSION:-20071003} of the ffmpeg.SlackBuild script to VERSION=${VERSION:-20080402}, i run the ffmpeg-mksrctarball.sh script after tar -xf the ffmpeg.tar.gz and cd into ffmpeg folder. I run the ffmpeg.SlackBuild script and i have this " ffmpeg-20080402/INSTALL ffmpeg-20080402/Changelog Unknown option "--enable-libogg". See ./configure --help for available options." so i saw in the ./configure --help and i don't see the option --enable-libogg. Then i read the ./configure --help of the ffmpeg-20071003.tar.bz2 and i saw that the configure was different. The different are: * The version ffmpeg-20071003 the ffmpeg.SlackBuild script have --enable-libogg but the ./configure script of ffmpeg-20080402 don't have this option. * The version ffmpeg-20071003 the ffmpeg.SlackBuild script have --enable-pp (enable GPLed postprocessing support) but now in the ./configure script of ffmpeg-20080402 is the option --enable-postproc. * The ffmpeg-20071003 the ffmpeg.SlackBuild script have --enable-swscaler (software scaler support) but now in the ./configure script of ffmpeg-20080402 is the option --enable-swscale (without r). Second: The md5sum of the libtorrent-0.12.0.tar.gz Source is different, download so many times of the Slackbuilds.org repository and the official web libtorrent.rakshasa.no and is not same that in the Slackbuilds.org repository, i meaning in the Slackbuilds repository is the Source MD5SUM: 003c5a7a1d001282892eeeb93b57e035 but when you download from the Slackbuilds.org repository you have 76c818b095248ea9e4b140fff4e2fa2a and when you download from libtorrent.rakshasa.no you have 76c818b095248ea9e4b140fff4e2fa2a. I hope that you understand what i want meaning, (i am still learning english). -- Cesar Rodriguez From pc_warner at yahoo.com Thu Apr 10 12:27:01 2008 From: pc_warner at yahoo.com (Phillip Warner) Date: Thu, 10 Apr 2008 09:27:01 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] website request - different titles for pages Message-ID: <941163.71206.qm@web57713.mail.re3.yahoo.com> It would be nice if the various Slackbuilds.org pages had different titles. For a long time, we didn't really take a position on whether our scripts would support other Slackware-like distributions (again, especially 64bit stuff). As time went on, we accepted a few changes here and there to make something build on Slamd64 (wine, for example), and that seemed to be a good thing. Presently, we've seen a much greater interest in having our scripts support Slamd64, and several people have volunteered to maintain the changes such support would require. We (the project admins) have discussed this quite a bit, trying to look at both the good points and bad points of supporting other Slackware-like distributions, and we have decided that we will not do so any longer, effective as of the release of Slackware 12.1. It's a bit of a "slippery slope" to support one derivative and not another, or to support one more than another, and we never want to be in a position where there's pressure to change how we do things in order to facilitate support for something other than Slackware (that should not be construed as a statement that such has happened). To quell any rumors that might start due to this announcement, there are absolutely NO ill feelings toward any Slackware derivative on the part of the SlackBuilds.org team, and especially not toward Slamd64 - Fred and I are friends. This decision is purely a technical one - we simply cannot afford to invest the extra time to maintain things targeting something other than Slackware. With that said, we hope that the community surrounding any interested Slackware derivatives will use the material at SlackBuilds.org as a starting point, and we wish them only the best. I'd like to set up a system to maintain slamd64 slackbuilds, using the ones on slackbuilds.org as a base, and to follow and integrate any changes from slackbuilds.org into the slamd64 version of them. This could certainly be done with the actual access system of slackbuilds.org (rsync), but I think it would be far more easy to do if all the material of slackbuilds.org were available as a Git repository (it would reduce the syncronization to pull and merge any changes to the slamd64 branch of the repository). So, my question (my kind and humble request) is: are there any plans on offering this kind of service in the future? I have no intention of changing the page title to beyond what we already have now. The page content displays the repository trail quite promimently anyway (System > Wine for instance). It does not make sense to bookmark individual pages IMO. I used removepkg for wxGTK, wxSVG, and DVDStyler. compile -- makepkg routine for wxPython, wxSVG, then DVDStyler. All programs linked fine with the newer wx2.8, but there are slight gui errors in DVDStyler and pressing some buttons cause the program to segfault. The gui drawing errors I could have lived with. They were just a line or there, nothing major. The gui for VLC is unusable when linked against wx2.8. Couldn't draw the volume, plus a few other errors. I didn't test it to open anything though, considering the GUI errors. So wxPython won't work here. Yes wxPython is a monster. The main highlights are: * Ability to rsync with and browse SBo repos for different Slackware versions (currently 11.0 and 12.0, and will be updated when 12.1 is out) * Improved search functionality for cli. The -s switch is the same as before, and will display the README, *.info etc. for a particular package name. New, however, is -q, which will search for packages by string and return a list of possible matches. This is now the search used in the dialog interface as well. * Various other cleanups and bugfixes. Also, I have set up a Google Groups mailing list that folks can join to get release announcements, discuss issues, etc. I apologize for cluttering up the SBo mailing list with sbopkg stuff, so if anyone is interested in following the development of sbopkg, please consider joining the Google Groups list. I won't post every sbopkg release and other similar things to this list anymore, other than maybe an occasional update. I have not yet seen these doublefree errors with VLC, but I am not yet running slackware-current on my desktop either so perhaps I have yet to see it. Anyway, it will not hurt to apply this patch if it is beneficial under slackware-current. I am curious to see if it has any effect in Slackware 12.0. I am curious to see if it has any effect in > Slackware 12.0. > > Eric Nice find, Keith. After some brief testing, it appears that this patch fixes the problems I was having with Audacity 1.3.4 on -current, which means that Audacity on current/12.1 can use wxGTK instead of wxPython. As it stands now, Audacity 1.3.4 works on current when built with wxPython. If others can confirm this, then maybe the wxGTK maintainer can include this patch with wxGTK and tweaking the wxGTK slackbuild to patch the source would be a nice addition to the -current/12.1 SBo updates. I've attached my wxGTK SlackBuild with such a change. I would also tweak the Audacity README to say that one can use either wxGTK 2.6.4 with the patch or wxPython 2.8.x. -- Chess Griffin GPG Public Key: 0x0C7558C3 http://www.chessgriffin.com -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I haven't been able to test it so far, but I read on various sites, that opensync generally does not work that good (currently). The only problem I have encountered is, that barry's opensync-plugin does only compile with 0.2x. I just had a quick look at opensync-0.22 and saw that they switched from autotools (0.2x) to cmake (0.3x), so making the build-script work for both is unlikely. Personally, if 0.22 is the stable version and it really does work better, I have no objections on downgrading. Any other opinions on that? It means for example that if an improvement is suggested to the XML files you would only need to edit one file to implement it, not two, three, four, however many you end up with (it can only get more annoying as time goes on). It doesn't add much complexity, so I don't see why you wouldn't want those advantages for maintainance. Both approaches are trivial, I just see a variable-based one as a more easily manageable one. What actually happens is of course vb's choice. dev wrote: > Hi > > I wouldn't do that. It works wonderfully, however, if you simply change a line at the bottom to: <os:Url type="text/html" method="GET" template="http://slackbuilds.org/result/?sv=12.0&search={searchTerms}"> </os:Url> You can obviously change 'sv' to whatever slackware version you want (only useful for versions slackBuilds.org supports). I don't know if Manuel Otto, who made this plugin, got permission to use the slackware image, however. --phil --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! All you have to do is to pass CFLAGS='-L/usr/lib/seamonkey/' CPPFLAGS='-I/usr/include/seamonkey/js' to configure and make to find the spidermonkey headers and library. It is quite useful since with javascript enabled I can log in my gmail account or connect to my online banking account. I've attached the patch against the current slackbuild.
