   I didn't see that. Apparently the caffine titre is not up to operational
level yet. The /usr/local/lib version dates from 2004. And I should have
known to go look for an obsolete version in /usr/local; mea culpa!

   That did the trick: compiled just fine.

   A valuable lesson relearned.
