It looks like the 3D board stuff is being built, but I don't have
those options in the Appearance settings.

As for sounds, I was wrong about them not being there.  The sounds are
put in the right place (/usr/share/gnubg/sounds/) but they don't play.
This may just be a problem with my sound setup, though the gnubg wavs
play fine with noatun.
