No more so than the idea that my script might have killed someone's

Just to be sure I ran the script again and I cannot duplicate your
findings. On my own system:

drwxr-xr-x  17 root root  4096 2008-10-18 10:43 var

and the news spool that leafnode uses:

drwxrws--- 30 news   news    4096 2008-10-18 10:43 news
