I won't speak for Erik, but most of mine only get looked if:
  1) someone pokes me about an update,
  2) I still use the app regularly (and thus check for updates
     on my own), or
  3) it's time for another Slackware release, at which point
     I check *all* of my stuff (and many other people's stuff
     to) for updates
