They're probably both *unable* AND *unwilling* to fix it. But the silver
lining is that this is a great opportunity for you to use your own
Slackware machine as your Mail Exchanger if you've got a nailed up
connection.

Alternatively, you can certainly go to hostmonster and change your MX
records to a different set of mail servers, and create A RRs for them
too that will route all of your SMTP traffic through a more sane provider.


That won't affect your webhosting at all. I've done this for a lot of
companies once they actually got into branding themselves and figuring
out that what most of these providers (hostmonster included) rather
expect people to have a website while placing gmail or socal.rr.com  or
other email addy's on their business cards.

Personally, aside from gmail (and only because of the level of
legitimate critical mass it commands), I abhor DEAs, and MaxMind loves
to flag new users with such DEAs as possibly fraudulent
transactions/signups too.
