/dev/ttyS0 is a serial device, so I wouldn't expect it to open with
a usb driver.  In other words, it looks like you have the same issue
that you corrected earlier in the LQ thread.

Can you attach your apcupsd.conf for me (and verify that you are 
connecting to a usb UPS)?
