All you have to do is crack open your address book and double click the 
SlackBuilds.org entry; where it says "Prefers to receive messages 
formatted as:" choose Plain Text in the drop-down list. Thunderbird 
defaults to "Unknown." You can choose Plain Text or HTML (and choose to 
allow remote content). This is also true of SeaMonkey, same address 
book, same settings.

Simple.
