I tried your tarball, it seems to also need xcb-util-cursor (
I'm using a Slackware current from mid 2014, don't know if xcb-util-cursor
is included in a new xcb-util package from Slack current repository...

It gives me the following error:

cc -DI3_VERSION=\"'4.9 (2015-02-28, branch \"tags/4.9\")'\"
                -I/usr/include/cairo -I/usr/include/glib-2.0

make: *** [src/resize.o] Error 1

I installed xcb-util-cursor and then i3 compiles without error, I'm using
it right now, everything seems to work ok.

Thank you :-)
