Thank you very much for that - I can confirm that with the new patches I 
was able to compile and install Ekiga here. On the downside, it keeps on 
freezing and won't register to the SIP server (with "remote party is 
offline" error) - although before Slackware upgrade it was working fine 
with the same settings. But that might be beyond the scope of this 
conversation. I'll keep on persisting with it to see if I get anywhere.
