I'm not heavily invested in it, I just have some RPis with Slackware on it that I occasionally use. Just sharing my thoughts, as it's a semi-frequently discussed topic. The main problem with allowing support for ARM is that the layout of the info files would change, which could break tooling. I just had an idea which wouldn't break any existing tools, but could enable architecture specific information to be read by other tools (or humans): For each additional supported architecture other than x86 and x86_64 add a file named ${PRGNAM}.${ARCH}info which add/override values of the classic info file. The only additional change would be in the code to detect architectures in the SlackBuilds, but that should be of no relevance for tools. The problem is that we (admins) might not have a machine to test the ARM architecture, so we can't validate the script. Plus it adds more loads to the admins to validate over 8k scripts during development cycle for next release of SlackBuild repository. We had issues with failing 32 bit builds for 15.0 since majority of users here are using 64 bit machines only and didn't test on 32 bit machines anymore so some goes undetected. -- Willy Sudiarto Raharjo -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Oracles way of hiding it under agreements and licensing makes me break out in sweat every time it is updated. Not often enough that I remember hos I did it the last time, but often enough bug me to no end. Two potential links are given: "You might be able to download the necessary parts from here: https://java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp" Here I'm given four links to packages. The heading of the page says: "Java Downloads for Linux Recommended Version 8 Update 361 Release date: January 17, 2023" Neat!, Exactly what I need. Version: perfect. However, it turns out to be jre, not jdk. The buildscript does, of course, not recognise the downloaded file. Homepage: https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html At this site, I find varous kinds of jdk-19. jdk (8u361) is nowhere to be found. If I can get help finding the correct file, I'd be happy. If developers found a way to not use Oracles tools, I'd be ecstatic. These are pain-free, just download and create package. Nothing in the repo actually depends on jdk, we went to some trouble to test everything with zulu-openjdk* during the pre-15.0 dev cycle. All my boxes are multicore Ryzen and have too many customizations on them for SBo reliability. That said, ARM VMs are problematic. Which arm? v7, v8, Cortex? Which board - RPi, Beagle, Pine, etc? There is no real standard for these ARM devices. ARM (the company) just defines a specification and licenses the architecture; implementation is up to the various manufacturers. As Willy stated, it is best for SBo to focus on x86/x86_64. For SBo-ARM, fork SBo to a bespoke ARM repository - assuming there is enough demand and volunteers to step up to run the ARM version. -Ed From urchlay at slackware.uk Sat Mar 4 18:38:36 2023 From: urchlay at slackware.uk (B. No such thing if you're running an ARM VM on x86 or x86_64, the VM has to emulate the ARM instruction set in software. Which will be noticeably slower... Most scripts I've tried in the years leading up to 2020 just built, using sbopkg. They got the source from the DOWNLOAD line in the info file (it's not DOWNLOAD_X86, after all) and just set the arch to 'uname -r' and built just fine. If that's what you mean by "support", go for it. You're mostly on your own, though. If - on the other hand - by "support" you mean some more or less official note in the .info file or on slackbuilds.org, I guess I agree with Willy. Wouldn't be hard to add that to every script in the repo. We've discussed it and the consensus is, it's not a bad idea... but if we do it, it will have to wait for the next development cycle (when submissions are closed, right after the next Slackware release). As far as adding e.g. DOWNLOAD_aarch64 to the .info file, that's not likely to happen any time soon. It would require database changes on the site, and that's not something to be done lightly. For my scripts I (most likely) won't test on ARM, but will gladly accept patches from ARM users to take care of any quirks. I only manage 13 scripts (some of which are upstream binaries repackaged into Slackware format). For the binary packages I would have no problem adding the appropriate "UNSUPPORTED" entries for ARM if we ever settle on a best practice of indicating ARM-specific download URLs (or the appropriate ARM URL if upstream supports it). Also ARM users may want to rally together to provide an ARM branch similar to ponce's current repo. It's like a Java-specific `alternative` command, except it also includes a downloader that can grab whatever version you need. http://sdkman.io Using `sdk list java` reveals that it can acquire Oracle (19) as well as OpenJDK, plus a bunch of other builds. Here's a tutorial on how it works: https://opensource.com/article/22/3/manage-java-versions-sdkman Hope that helps. -klaatu -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... If we simply bump the version to 4.0.1, and add python3-setuptools-rust as requirement it builds fine. See files included for anyone wanting to try it. It builds fine, *but*... It downloads a lot of crates. And that is not SBo policy to download stuff during a build. So I need to add those crates to the download URLs, and make the SlackBuild use them. And I am not Rust-proficient. Hence I'm asking for some help here on how to do that, and how to maintain it properly thereafter. Thanks ! - Yth. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... And I found it: rust-info.sh.txt and rust64-info.sh.txt from here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/slackbuilds-using-crates-4175711422/ This thread has older versions of those scripts but more commentary: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/are-there-plans-to-extend-the-templates-sbo-repository-4175706740/ Erich From arnaud.garcia-fernandez at laposte.net Wed Mar 8 14:49:01 2023 From: arnaud.garcia-fernandez at laposte.net (Arnaud) Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2023 15:49:01 +0100 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] Rust question for python3-bcrypt In-Reply-To: <20230308141443.uncehhzjjdxv32vi@Baldr.vingolf.info> References: <20230308110903.4e45843baad90535ac98c606@laposte.net> <4iT2Xu_0czw8vhEK04pDfHGgTPIgIg56gPGnUTe82xEE4r1j-5VVOcGigkdc5c8O_VTLYNEjLoOlQFnUOKwB_uAKxZdX6I_2HZrDrBewNlI=@protonmail.com> <20230308141443.uncehhzjjdxv32vi@Baldr.vingolf.info> Message-ID: <20230308154901.29eb4e3aaee48c5334e940b0@laposte.net> Erich Ritz via SlackBuilds-users > See for example https://slackbuilds.org/repository/15.0/system/bat/ > The SlackBuild has an extra bit that forces cargo to look on the local > filesystem instead of the net. > Additionally, here are my scripts to create the the "DOWNLOAD" and "MD5SUM" > parts of the info file. I have had a lot of success with pkgsrc in the past on both Slackware and MacOS, so that would be my first solution. The second is to use lynx, which is a standard package under Slackware, as mentioned by KB. You could try the "daemon" package for this, it's shipped with Slackware and works pretty well! Here's how I do it for my dendrite SlackBuild (not on SBo yet): ----8<------------------------------- #!/bin/sh if [ -f /etc/default/dendrite ]; then . /etc/default/dendrite fi dendrite_start() { if [ -x /usr/bin/dendrite-monolith-server ]; then daemon -n dendrite -u dendrite -- dendrite-monolith-server-tls-key $TLSKEY -tls-cert $TLSCERT -config /etc/dendrite/dendrite.yaml fi } dendrite_stop() { daemon -n dendrite -u dendrite --stop } dendrite_restart() { dendrite_stop sleep 1 dendrite_start } case "$1" in 'start') dendrite_start ;; 'stop') dendrite_stop ;; 'restart') dendrite_restart ;; *) echo "usage $0 start|stop|restart" esac ----8<------------------------------- I'm not sure how to handle the waiting for the network. I suppose you could add something which checks if network manager is connected, but be aware that there are people (myself included) who use the classic Slackware network scripts for this and it wouldn't work. Maybe you could add something which pings the tailscale servers, you are going to connect to them anyway. For people using Slackware's networking scripts, you could just add a simple command to rc.local. if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.tailscale ]; then /etc/rc.d/rc.tailscale start fi For people using NetworkManager, they could add a script (maybe 00-tailscale.sh) to /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/ containing something like: if [ "$2" = "up" ]; then if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.tailscale ]; then /etc/rc.d/rc.tailscale start fi fi I don't use NetworkManager, but I believe that is the correct format. (I am just curious as I am not using it a lot and it would be good to have some feedback) I assume that the compilation works but that the error appears at the end of the built, which would be very frustrating; That error possibly relates to these lines in the SlackBuild: ##### # re-organise info files the Slackware/SBo way mkdir $PKG/usr/info/ rm $PKG/usr/share/info/dir #gzip and move info file gzip -9 $PKG/usr/share/info/*.info mv $PKG/usr/share/info/*.info* $PKG/usr/info/ rmdir $PKG/usr/share/info ##### I tend to test-run the script with `sh Vienna.Slackbuild` and this builds a package with the below core-structure; the 'usr/info' section is the result of above lines (the original, compiled package puts the info in '/usr/share/info'): ./ install/ install/slack-desc usr/ usr/bin/ [loads of programs] usr/doc/ usr/doc/ViennaRNA-2.5.1/ usr/include/ [loads of .h files also is sub-folders) usr/include/ViennaRNA/ usr/info/ usr/info/RNAlib.info.gz usr/lib/ usr/lib/libg2.a usr/lib64/ usr/lib64/libRNA.a usr/lib64/perl5/ usr/lib64/pkgconfig/ usr/lib64/pkgconfig/RNAlib2.pc usr/lib64/python3.9/ usr/lib64/python3.9/site-packages/ usr/lib64/python3.9/site-packages/RNA/ usr/man/ usr/share/ usr/share/ViennaRNA/ usr/share/ViennaRNA/examples/ usr/share/ViennaRNA/tutorial/ usr/share/ViennaRNA/viennarna.bib usr/share/perl5/ Slackware package /tmp/ViennaRNA-2.5.1-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz created. This seems to work at my end. And the command `info RNAlib` gives the info entry for ViennaRNA. Can you maybe explain how you built the package at your end? Is it possible that the build did not complete, say because the tmp-folder was filled up and '/tmp/SBo/package-ViennaRNA/usr/share/info/dir' was never created to begin with? The doinst.sh script contains package post-installation tasks. There is also a douninst.sh which contains post package-removal tasks. However, they aren't always needed. Our template files have quite a lot of info: https://slackbuilds.org/templates/ Slackwiki and SlackDocs are a good source of information on anything Slackware related. https://www.slackwiki.com https://docs.slackware.com There are some HowTos on writing Slackbuild scripts, although there isn't one AFAICT that specifically relates to SBo script format, and it looks the they haven't been updated for 15.0 style scripts (e.g. they /bin/sh instead of /bin/bash). E.G. see: https://www.slackwiki.com/index.php?search=doinst.sh&title=Special%5aSearch&fulltext=Search HTH Dave > On 3/25/23, Alejandro Andreu wrote: > > Feel free to take over the Slackbuild, I'm no longer looking after it! > > > > -------- Original Message -------- > > On Mar 25, 2023, 3:05 PM, Luna Jernberg wrote: > > > >> Hey! just fyi would be nice if you could update your Slackbuild of fish: > >> https://slackbuilds.org/repository/15.0/system/fish/ to the latest version > >> ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: David Adam via Fish-users > >> Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2023 19:08:28 +0800 (AWST) Subject: [Fish-users] fish > >> 3.6.1 released To: fish-users Mailing List -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED > >> MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA512 Hi all, I am pleased to announce the release of > >> version 3.6.1 of fish. Actually, I just tried building fish-3.6.1 with the existing SlackBuild (with 'export VERSION=3.6.1' in the environment) and it builds fine and seems to create a working package. So if you're considering taking over this build, it should be a minimal amount of work for you: you'd just update VERSION and BUILD in the script, and VERSION, DOWNLOAD, MD5SUM in the .info file. After doing that, you'd want to actually install and run the new version of fish and make sure it works correctly. I don't use fish, so I don't know all of what constitures "correctly"... but it at least seems to give me a shell where I can type commands, and "help" brings up a browser (which was highly unexpected by me, I thought it'd just print some information to the terminal, like bash does). So it passes at least 'basic functionality' tests. R-devel is the unstable release, but may be preferable to a bespoke patch; there's no great solution but at least R-devel comes from the R core team. I don't see any critical bugfix in the new version, just a few more supported device. Marav included in his build a patch to enable automatic generation of udev rules to properly support power handling on suspend. Unfortunately that patch looks hackish as hell, the "needs a HACK_GEN_RULES env variable set" kind of hackish, so I'm not sure if it fits. I'll try to investigate other possible solutions.
