OK, I just built 3.5.1 with the existing script (VERSION=3.5.1 in the
environment) and it starts up and seems to work OK.

It does say this:

spectrwm: Welcome to spectrwm V3.5.1 Build: 3.5.1

...so I know I'm running the right version.

So whatever's going on might be specific to your system...
