Yes, i have sent email to both maintainer about this issue (duplicate) 
and it seems that tbb is the original script (we missed that while 
approving oneTBB). I haven't receive any reply from both maintainer on 
this one, but if tbb is working properly, we just need one of them in 
the repository.

libtorch-cxx11-abi-shared-with-deps is replaced by pytorch
and stablediffusion-pipelines-cpp became obsolete as dependency
of a buildscript to come.

Hello,

I am in the process of updating my LucasChess SlackBuild to the latest 
version. Something new in this version is that when you first start it 
up and click Play, it goes through some process where it decides which 
build of stockfish (the analysis engine) is appropriate for your machine 
and makes a copy of it. This means the directory 
/opt/LucasChess-$VERSION/bin/OS/linux/Engines/stockfish needs to be 
writable by regular users, or else it will just hang. Is this acceptable?

An alternative potential solution that I think would work would be to 
have the SlackBuild script copy the file, selecting a build that would 
work for everyone. For those who may know more about that sort of thing, 
the available builds are:

stockfish-16.1-x86-64
stockfish-16.1-x86-64-avx2
stockfish-16.1-x86-64-avx512
stockfish-16.1-x86-64-avxvnni
stockfish-16.1-x86-64-bmi2
stockfish-16.1-x86-64-sse3-popcnt
stockfish-16.1-x86-64-sse41-popcnt
stockfish-16.1-x86-64-ssse3
stockfish-16.1-x86-64-vnni256
stockfish-16.1-x86-64-vnni512

The copy it makes is called stockfish-16.1-64. On my machine, it seems 
to have copied the bmi2 version, but maybe the plain -x86-64 version 
would be more universal. (For that matter, if I take this approach, I'll 
probably just make a symbolic link instead of wasting disk space with a 
copy.)

I can think of three approaches that avoid a world-writable directory
in /opt.

1. Duplicate (or copy/paste, if possible) the logic it uses to decide
    which binary to copy, and put the logic in the SlackBuild (you
    could also just rm the other binaries, since they'll be unused).
    Or maybe do it in the doinst.sh.

2. Mention in the README that it has to be run as root, once, to
    set up the engine. Further, you could replace the game binary with
    a script that checks whether the copy/symlink exists, and if it
    doesn't exist, bail out with a message telling the user to run it
    as root.

3. If the main game binary (the thing that copies the engine file) is
    a regular binary (not a script), you could make it run setgid
    games, and make the engine directory writable by (owned by) the
    games group. This is how a lot of games handle their high-scores
    file (in /var/games/<whatever>/). But this won't work if the main
    game binary is a script (shell, perl, python, etc).

I can think of one more approach... assuming the stockfish-16.1-x86-64
binary will run on anything x86_64 (because it doesn't have
fancy CPU-specific optimizations), pre-create the symlink to that
one. Advise the user that the other engines exist (in the README)
and give a short set of instructions on how to choose the right one
(basically as simple as, rm the symlink, run the engine as root once).

This way, people who just install it without paying much attention
will at least get a working (if unoptimized) package.

Thanks for the ideas. I like the idea of using the setgid bit, but I'm 
having trouble getting it to work. First, the main executable is a 
wrapper script, which may be a problem, but even applying the setguid

After some more testing, I don't think that having the SlackBuild script 
copy or symlink one of the stockfish executables will solve the problem. 
There is apparently also a setting in the user config directory that it 
looks for, and if that isn't present, it will try to go through the 
copying process anyway.

Asking the user to run as root the first time would work, but I would 
also have to tell them to then copy the configuration directory from 
/root to their user directory and set permissions accordingly, which 
seems rather unwieldy and inconvenient. In a related idea, what about 
installing the program with some group ownership (say "LucasChess") and 
asking the user to join that group before running?

Because the wrapper script exports LD_LIBRARY_PATH (to tell the
executable where to find the libs), and glibc deliberately ignores
that variable on binaries with the setuid or setgid bits set.

So that approach wouldn't work.

Hm. You mean, if the copy was created by running it as root, it
*still* tries to make a new copy, if run without a config file?

That could work. Go with a lowercase group name though, lucaschess or
just lucas.

For that matter, you could go with the system games group. Ask
user to join that group. Though, it would also let the user edit
the high scores for games that save high scores as the games
group. Realistically I don't think this matters much.

/etc/ld.so.conf.d/ is a bad idea. sbopkglint will complain about it, and there's
a good reason for it.

Any library path mentioned in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ will be used *before*
the standard paths or the ones in /etc/ld.so.conf. This means, if you
use it in a SBo package, and if that package includes a library that
lots of software uses, *everything else* on the system will use the
new library instead of the Slackware-provided one.

A concrete example: a while back we had a package that broke wget,
because wget (a stock Slackware package) was using a library in
/etc/ld.so.conf.d/ that was linked with systemd's libraries. Sorry
I can't remember the name of the build now, but sooner or later I
will...

Yes, it still tries to make a new copy if the config file isn't already 
present or if using a config file from a previous version that doesn't 
include that setting. Actually, upon further review, the file 
stockfish-16.1-64 is already there when LucasChess is first installed, 
but it apparently copies over it or at least modifies it in some way 
during the detection process. So my initial idea of simply providing 
this file is definitely not enough to avoid this process.

Thanks, I think I'll go with the approach of creating a new group. It 
seems like the most straightforward way of dealing with the problem, and 
there are a good number of existing scripts that do something like this.

It would seem that the new version of perl-Module-Build-Tiny requires the
CPAN::Requirements::Dynamic module.

# perl -MCPAN -e shell

Starting with version 2.29 of the cpan shell, a new download mechanism
is the default which exclusively uses cpan.org as the host to download
from. The configuration variable pushy_https can be used to (de)select
the new mechanism. Please read more about it and make your choice
between the old and the new mechanism by running

    o conf init pushy_https

Once you have done that and stored the config variable this dialog
will disappear.
Terminal does not support AddHistory.

To fix that, maybe try>  install Term::ReadLine::Perl


cpan shell -- CPAN exploration and modules installation (v2.34)
Enter 'h' for help.

I changed it locally but I forgot to change it when I moved the changes in
the commit...

actually I was also considering about removing the manual build completely
because if you build it without it (the default), when you select the
manual on the menu, the online version gets opened in the default browser:
could that be an acceptable alternative, in your opinion?

well, looking better at it it seems that, at the moment, the audacity devs
f***ed up the manual installation routine (it happens very often) so, also
if you install it, you still get redirected to the online documentation...
I'll just note it and hope it gets fixed somehow (also hope to not get
bored trying to make this work).

ok, upstream just confirmed that in-app support for the offline manual is
gone

https://github.com/audacity/audacity/issues/6402

so I'll leave the option but will now be to put it as-is in
/usr/doc/audacity-$VERSION/

Hi all,


I was wondering if it's fine to use another scripting language like Perl 
for an rc script, rather than bash for a slackbuild. I'm not the biggest 
fan of scripting in bash due to a lot of shortcomings such as constant 
forking, lack of simple arithmetic, etc. It's fine if not though. It's 
not a hill i'm gonna die on or anything lol.

My two cents is that one should keep it with bash, as most people at
least can read it - I'd be a bit lost with perl :) Slackware ships with
"daemon" which can take care of most of the required tasks. It's a
really nice tool.

available (even if the system is yours).

If you mean "*.SlackBuild that builds my slackbuild" then you're
inviting certain painful experiences (probably not worth it).

p.s.  From get go I've foreseen that rc.inet* will be crippling.  So
I've set on path of home-brew networking.  I choose zsh for this.

Yeah, I meant an init script. You are right that I can't guarantee that 
someone doesn't have their /usr partition mounted. But then again, by 
the time anything runs in rc.local, every should be mounted in the 
fstab. So I don't think it'd be too much of a problem?

That, or, put #!/bin/bash at the top of the script instead of
#!/bin/sh. I don't think bash is going to disappear from Slackware,
even if the #!/bin/sh link someday points to something else.

I'm taking this as a bug report? You did not even write anything in your
message.

Anyway, I cannot reproduce. I synced the latest scripts and built this
on a full patched stable x86_64 machine (slackpkg upgrade-all yields
nothing) without problem - see log below. I also built it again on our x86_64
stable CI build box without problem:

Interesting... I was under the impression that bc was unable to do 
floating numbers. Probably a false memory or some article I read being

build only in i586 architecture. Most of us are now using x86_64

The build errors are on "32bits Slackware 15.0" right? or only in true
"i586 architecture" machines?
I'm asking this because my VBox Slackware 32 bits 15.0 is reported on the
kernel as *i686*.

Seems like an incomplete version update - I can get a file from

Also the md5sum I get is bd39bfd38cfa99bd9366ffe6676f0811 - not what the 
info file says.

I've just updated *system/fastfetch* and I'm getting this error message:
fastfetch: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/librpmio.so.10: undefined

and requires says nothing: REQUIRES=""

Maybe some new dependency?

I think your issue is because /usr/lib64/librpmio.so.10 is part of the rpm
package in current and there links to the system's lua (lua-5.4.x).

Hi,

I maintain the 'xvfb-run' SlackBuild on slackbuilds.org. I no longer have
any use for it and would like to drop maintaining it. If anyone wants it,
feel free to take over. Otherwise if there's no interest after a while I'll
request the admin to remove it.

For some background/context if anyone wants:
My 'mutter' and 'gnome-shell' slackbuilds used to depend on this package
for running some tests. I've removed that dependency and no longer need the
'xvfb-run' package. The 'xvfb-run' package is a wrapper script for the Xvfb
server. It gets packaged with xvfb server by other distros like
debian/fedora/etc, but not in Slackware. This slackbuild is one I took over
from the previous abondoner and just maintained it because I had it as a
dependency. The annoying part about it is that it extracts the wrapper
script from a debian xvfb server package, and the source url/package
changes every other month or so when debian updates xvfb server. It really
should get a stable host of that wrapper script on github or something, but
I just don't have use for it anymore so I'd rather leave it for someone who
cares and uses it.

FWIW I just built it fine from scratch, together with all of its
dependencies on slackware64-15.0.
glancing at the error it might be that rebuilding and reinstalling
protobuf3 would be enough in your case, but YMMV...

Thanks. I had to rebuild both protobuf3 and protobuf-c, but after that I
was able to build fwupd without any problems.

Another way would be to upload a tarball (maybe to SBo source archive?)
with the vendored go dependencies. I wrote something like the
following script to create such a tarball - no guarantees though :)

that the "vendor" directory is again where it is supposed to. "go build"
should pick it up automatically.

Unfortunately, most of go-related packages requires network access to 
download all the modules

i will try to use vendored script to make offline build for this week's 
release

I just looked up [1] how to download modules directly from the go module
proxy. It's rather simple: https://go.dev/ref/mod#goproxy-protocol
To download the module "github.com/lib/pq", version v1.10.9 you would
download https://proxy.golang.org/github.com/lib/pq/@v/v1.10.9.zip

Unfortunately the zip-files are named only using the version, making
collisions likely. The module server doesn't send a Content-Disposition
header and doesn't allow for arbitrarily named files like GitHub does
for tags.

So either we allow source files with the same file name in info files,
likely giving trouble with automated build systems or the Go people add
a possibility to allow named files. I fear it's unlikely that the
module server will see this added.

Side note: I think it would be nice to standardize on something like
"download.sh" which SlackBuilds can optionally provide for cases like
this. It would still allow the classic way while adding comfort
and the possibility for automatization. Another thing would be optional
"$PRGNAM.info_$(uname -m)" files, or similar, for other architectures.

There is an concept by Alexander Verbovetsky, which I tried to implement
as a script:

It's a solution, but it needs to be extended for every possibly
repository host. I actually have made a similar script to deal with git
submodules which also are a royal PITA, but I don't have it at hand now.

The Go module proxy is made for giving a stable location to download
modules - only the file names are bad. It's really annoying to have a
problem almost solved but then have it blocked by the possibility of
conflicting file names.

Hence my idea of having a standard for something like "download.sh".
Don't require it, but standardize on a filename so that automated tools
can use it while the networked step still is cleanly separated from
building.

Unfortunately info files sometimes just don't cut it anymore
in these times. Other distributions solve this by various means. IIRC
for arch linux scripts you can give the name a file should be saved as.
Other systems implement "downloaders" in their build system.

What would also be really nice and clean would allowing to use other
schemes in URLs for sources. For example
"go:golang.org/x/mod/modfile-v1.2.3" or
"rust:whatever-rust-does-v3.2.1". This of course would require the host
to understand these links, going down the
downloader-route. Maybe we can provide a "sbo-downloader" tool.

I think this is a problem which needs to be solved at some point, not
worked around forever. Offline builds are something really good and
well worth saving as a standard. I don't want the build step to randomly
download stuff - doesn't work anyway in the chroot based solution I use.

I'm happy to discuss possible solutions.

That is the package from the Slackware patches/ dir (slack15.0 tag) that 
I guess you're trying to download using slackpkg.

It has nothing to do with SBo.

You may need to check your network connection and/or change your mirror 
in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors to see if the issue persists.

Hi Jude and All,

Jude, you ran "slapt-get --upgrade" which in this case downloaded from a
Slackware repository mozilla-firefox-115.11.0esr-x86_64-1_slack15.0.txz provided
on Tue May 14 19:07:51 UTC 2024 so slackbuilds.org is not in concern.

Further I got this package properly upgraded with the same command, so the issue
is probably on you end.

Try:
slapt-get --clean
then again:
slapt-get --upgrade
If the md5 issue remains, there could be a problem with your Internet connection.

Jude,

Try running as root.  Latest firefox.  This will grab the latest firefox
which is 126 something.  I am guessing this is the version you want.  If you
want the esr version, you will want to contact the salex devevelopper.  HTH.
BTW this script also works with google chrome as well.
