From willysr at slackbuilds.org Sat Nov 1 03:20:54 2025 From: willysr at slackbuilds.org (Willy Sudiarto Raharjo) Date: Sat, 1 Nov 2025 10:20:54 +0700 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] Updates - 20251101.1 Message-ID: <20251101102054.1e9d0e9e@home.slackie.org> Last week, we didn't run full CI check due to one commit that causes an inifite loop on another script and that particular commit has been reverted this week. Full CI check will be done this week, but we might miss some old issue from last week public update. It's also a good reminder for maintainers to use the latest version of the scripts from our website or git repository instead of using their own local copy as we might changed your submission during approval. As you might now, the email issue related to submission is now resurfacing again, so you will not receive any email from us when you submit via submission form. If you have a github/gitlab account, it would be better to send your updates through Pull Request / Merge Requests as we can see the changes and give feedback directly if there's an issue. please refer to this documentation if you are planning to use github/gitlab to submit your updates https://slackbuilds.org/SBo-Github-Workflows.txt This applies to Github, but it can be easily adapted for Gitlab as well. Make sure you have sbo-maintainer-tools installed and validate your script before sending PR/MR to make approval process faster. Addendum to this: If you're using the submission form, you don't actually need the submission email to be able to remove the submission later, if you need to. Just make a note of the md5sum of your tarball when you submit it. Then, if you later decide to remove the submission, go to: https://slackbuilds.org/remove/ ...and type/paste the tarball filename and md5sum. If the removal fails, it may mean it was already approved. We accepted this because it's a build-time dependency, not a runtime dependency. By having this llvm-opt in SBo, we can cover more CI test because we have some scripts that depends on newer version of llvm in -stable but the default CI doesn't install anything from /extra Please note that -stable also introduced *even newer* llvm in /extra We can't have the same situation with other scripts like Python/Perl/Ruby. Sadly that's not possible for Slackware 15.0. We're stuck with 3.9. Someone tried to submit a python3.12 build (that wouldn't conflict with Slackware's python) and it got shot down. For now, anyway. As our EOLed python3.9 get more and more useless, there will be more interest in a newer python version... especially since it doesn't look like Pat is anywhere near ready to release the next Slackware version (15.1 or 16.0, whatever it ends up being called). Being stuck with an EOLed python for the next year will be intolerable, and I doubt I'll tolerate it. For now, I'll have to use the prebuilt x86_64 binary of yt-dlp (which I package as yt-dlp-bin). Sadly that means no 32-bit support, since upstream doesn't provide an x86 binary. > Just running pipe-viewer as suggested: > pipe-viewer --ytdl-cmd='/usr/bin/yt-dlp --remote-components ejs:github' > get the expected video and audio output. I also use Ponce's SlackBuild, but without vendored tarball - something I don't have yet time to get my hands on ;-) BTW, for now I stick to version 1.11.1, because newer versions cause me issues. Adds PYTHONVER as an input variable. The default is "3" if none is given on the command line. 2. Changes the calls to python3 to python$PYTHONVER 3. If PYTHONVER was provided adds a tag to the package name. This allows something like: $PYTHONVER=3.14 ./some_python_build.Slackbuild The python build will be done against the requested version of python and the package name will end with -py3.14-SBO so that it won't clobber any other versions of the build you may have installed in /var/log/packages/. This way if you upgrade python on your machine you can easily rebuild modules for the new version. If you don't supply a PYTHONVER then the build defaults to the system python3. Hope this is found useful. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Duncan. hi Duncan (and Andrzej), ehm, I actually already described how to build the vendored tarball in the README :-) I quote from that: --- NOTE: if you wish to update virtiofsd yourself you need to create a tarball first with the vendored versions of the rust dependencies: to create the "vendor" source dir yourself unpack the virtiofsd tarball, enter its directory and execute these three commands export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/opt/rust/lib64:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" export PATH="/opt/rust/bin:$PATH" cargo vendor then you can create a tarball with tar Jcf ../virtiofsd-$VERSION-vendor.tar.xz vendor this is necessary to avoid downloading stuff during execution of the SlackBuild. --- as "cargo vendor" downloads also some non-needed stuff for other oses and archs there is who prefer "cargo vendor-filterer" (see for example https://slackware.osuosl.org/slackware64-current/source/d/cbindgen/fetch-sources.sh), but as the additional stuff isn't too big and this last command isn't available by default on 15.0 I'll just use the former. after you confirmed it was ok on 15.0 (it wasn't when I tried years ago but there wasn't a rust-opt script at the time) I submitted virtiofsd on SBo but if you use it I'm perfectly ok with you taking maintainership with the next update... Matteo P.S. I'll put Edward in cc in case he wants to set it as an optional dependency of qemu now that it will be available on SBo. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My response would be that I can change the patch to use that if that is what people want. PYTHONVER is just what I started with when I started doing this in scripts. If you have a bunch of packages that you will be building this way you can also just export the variable and build without typing it for each build. Note: I originally sent this to B. Upon searching what options are out there, I found xrdp was pretty highly recommended. However, I found the version on SBo hadn't been updated in almost 5 years. I was in a hurry to get this up and running (procrastination at its finest), so I did what I needed locally to build and install modern versions of xrdp (and xorgxrdp) since the versions on SBo have vulnerabilities addressed by future versions. Normally, I'd reach out to the maintainer and see if they're willing to let me take over maintenance, however, I was in a rush to get out the door and didn't think much about it until today (12 days later). I can still reach out to Phillip Warner, the maintainer for both these packages, however, his last update on SBo was in April of 2020 (and not even for either of these packages). For packages that have maintainers who have been inactive on SBo for a large period of time (personally, I'm thinking at least a year, if not more), can current maintainers take over without needing to go through the process of requesting a takeover from the current author, hoping they respond in a week or so, and if they don't, request takeover permission on this list? Personally, I think 1 year of inactivity of the author is reasonable, however, I do realize we have more than half the maintainers only maintaining a single script, and some of those programs might have years between their releases, which their maintainer is tracking. I'm curious if there is a threshold of inactivity of an author where SBo admins consider an author to have orphaned their scripts, or should new potential takeovers *always* reach out to the original maintainers to see their current status? This specific email was due to realizing the xrdp maintainer has been inactive for 5.5 years and thinking it was reasonable for me to just take over the scripts, but I figured this might be something the admins might want to weigh in on if they have a specific threshold in mind. In this case, you're free to take over the builds because the author posted to the list that he was abandoning them. See: http://lists.slackbuilds.org/pipermail/slackbuilds-users/2019-January/022617.html The same goes for any of Phillip Warner's other builds: https://slackbuilds.org/advsearch.php?stype=maint&q=pc_warner From glimrick at epilitimus.com Sun Nov 30 16:45:03 2025 From: glimrick at epilitimus.com (Glenn) Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2025 08:45:03 -0800 Subject: [Slackbuilds-users] Author Inactivity Threshold Question Regarding Takeovers In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: On 11/29/25 22:42, Jeremy Hansen wrote: > Personally, I think 1 year of inactivity of the author is reasonable, > however, I do realize we have more than half the maintainers only > maintaining a single script, and some of those programs might have > years between their releases, which their maintainer is tracking. I've read the official reply but this spawned a thought that might be useful in the general case. How about basing it on number of releases? If the package authors have made N releases with no update from the maintainer, and the maintainer doesn't respond to queries within a reasonable time period then it is up for grabs. If there was an official policy, it would simplify taking over abandoned (but never orphaned) builds and could lead to updates pushed weeks earlier than they normally would be. I do understand that it would be hard to capture this cleanly in a "one size fits all" policy that B. Watson mentioned, I was just hoping they already had something. @ B. Watson, thanks for that. I guess I should search my email when checking on an inactive author to see if they've already posted about it... Jeremy -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My rationale for basing it on a number of releases without an update is that it would allow for mature projects which have few widely spaced new releases, as well as young projects which tend to have a much higher release rate. Using a number of releases without update would cover both without tying it to an amount of time. As? for waiting for a response from the maintainer, I added that in case the maintainer was just about to make an update. My approach would be the person wanting to take over would do the research, checking how many unsupported releases there have been and reaching out to the current maintainer. If they don't hear back in say a week, or the message bounces, then they pass their findings along to the admins who make the decision. I admit it would take a bit of time but it would also prevent some hard feelings from toes getting stepped on. In any case it was just an idea, thought I would put it out as an option. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
