There must be something I don't understand about using sbotools on a -current system. If someone can set me straight, I'd be grateful. The system: * Slack64 -current, reasonably up to date. * sbotools 3.8.1 (recently upgraded from sbotools 2) ? Have in /etc/setuptools.conf: ? REPO=https://github.com/Ponce/slackbuilds.git * Python 3.12.11 from the stock distro Basic approach I took: /usr/sbin/sbocheck /usr/sbin/sboinstall python3-scipy sbocheck seems to work.? The scipy build fails with: ERROR Missing dependencies: ? ? ? ? pythran<0.18.0,>=0.14.0 ? ? ? ? numpy ? ? ? ? numpy<2.5,>=2.0.0 Perplexing, because sbotools did pick up the pythran dependency and successfully built and installed python3-pythran-0.15.0 The numpy dependency is a tough one. If I try to install numpy directly with sboinstall numpy (or python3-numpy) I get... numpy not found; skipping. (or: python3-numpy not found; skipping.) Poking around my local copy of the repo, I noticed a python3-numpy-legacy SlackBuild and gave it a try: sboinstall numpy python3-numpy-legacy ... and it failed too, with various warnings such as: NumPy 1.24.4 may not yet support Python 3.12 `numpy.distutils` is deprecated since NumPy 1.23.0... No module named 'distutils.msvccompiler' So I'm stuck. Fallback is to install directly with pip (this has worked in the past), but I'd rather go with the flow, SlackBuilds-wise, if it can be done. Kind thanks for any ideas on how to do this. regards Judah -- ===== milgram at cgpp.com 301-257-7069 From kvngncrlsn at gmail.com Thu Sep 11 14:55:57 2025 From: kvngncrlsn at gmail.com (K. Thanks for the tip! Along the way, the pythran dependency problem went away. Can't figure out why but it doesn't matter. Now I'm stuck at matplotlib: ERROR Missing dependencies: ? ? ? ? numpy<2.3,>=1.24.4 The Slackware python-numpy package is v2.3.3. Haven't dug into it too closely but I wonder if the matplotlib slackbuild needs to be updated (currently builds matplotlib 3.8.4; upstream is 3.10). Could give it a try, but does someone know a solution that's closer at hand? thanks! Judah On 9/11/25 10:59, J. Milgram wrote: > Cool!? I don't think I have the Slackware package installed. I've wanted to update scipy, but it required a newer cython than included with Slackware. Once I found *Yth - Arnaud*'s python3-cython-opt package, I looked at updating scipy, but realized it needed a newer numpy, and there were a LOT of packages that relied on numpy (150ish). I worked through about 5 of the packages I maintain before I found another roadblock that required some random version of a package that wasn't the latest, which required I downgrade another updated package to an earlier version (but newer than what I originally had), which had a cascade effect on other packages I updated. After realizing the issues I was getting into with just the packages I maintain with the newer python3-numpy (which I don't maintain), I brushed it off and realized that I didn't have the time to go through to test all 150 programs to get everything updated. Plus there's several packages I can't upgrade because they require a python version newer than 3.9. SciPy and several others will probably sit until the Slackware 15.1 or 16.0 is released. Until then, you might have to rely on pip to get some python software installed. Jeremy On Sat, Sep 13, 2025, 11:02?PM J. You can fix it by switching back to the old setuptools way of installing matplotlib; i.e., in the SlackBuild script, change the lines that start like this: python3 -m build ... python3 -m installer ... to the following: python3 setup.py build python3 setup.py install --root=$PKG Dan On 9/14/25 2:02 AM, J. This should be a seamless upgrade for all builds that depend on gumbo-parser: the src/ directory hasn't changed since 0.13.1. Only the build stuff (autoconf and meson; we're using meson), documentation, and self-test suite (fuzz/) have changed. I test-built everything that depends on gumbo-parser, and it's all fine. I'm basically sending this out to save everyone from worrying that the update might break their builds (it won't). I needed an advanced mount command: typed 'man mount'.? Manpage had been replaced by a Plan 9 manpage.? If someone wants Slackware Plan 9, fine, but, please warn and document in README.? It may be broken: removepkg said 'xargs: unmatched double quote; by default quotes are special to xargs unless you use the -0 option'.? Manpage remained afterwards but day after removal, my manpage is back to normal.? I'm not 100% sure plan9port did it but didn't find/remove any other Plan 9 stuff so likely plan9port overwrites Slackware (manpages) with no documentation to warn. This is also why as much as I love fonts (as an artist/writer) I removed all fonts I installed from SlackBuilds.org years ago and am not installing any more.? One in 2010s overwrote defaults and made my X Window System font too small/unreadable.? Is the policy don't overwrite system 100% enforced/fixed for fonts yet, or could I just backup font configuration directory then restore it after installing? Hats off to whoever made dropbear.SlackBuild to change (years ago) from overwriting sshd.? At the time I couldn't SSH into my servers, but that's fixed after update/reinstall of dropbear.? I like to test/learn all sorts of new software including system & network but generally want to read/configure by myself. If people want to change defaults, they'll read about it and do it. Don't just do that automatically like one expects on WIndows, Apple, Ubuntu, Android. I needed an advanced mount command: typed 'man > mount'.? Manpage had been replaced by a Plan 9 manpage.? If someone > wants Slackware Plan 9, fine, but, please warn and document in README.? It hasn't been replaced. The plan 9 man pages are in /opt/plan9/man. The /etc/profile.d/plan9port.sh script alters MANPATH to put the plan9 man directory first, which is why you're seeing the plan9 mount man page. You could have looked inside the /var/log/packages/plan9port-* file to see where its man pages get installed, or used "man -w" to see the full path to the mount man page (which would have included /opt/plan9port/man). However, the fix is simple: without removing the plan9port package, you can say "chmod -x /etc/profile.d/plan9port.*", then log out and back in. Profile scripts, PATH, and MANPATH are basic UNIX knowledge. You really should have been able to solve this on your own, IMO. I agree that this is kind of a messed up thing to do without mentioning it in the README. Have you contacted the plan9port SlackBuild maintainer about this? That's a better idea than posting to the mailing list. Look in the plan9port.info file to find the maintainer's name and email address. You shouldn't really be complaining to the mailing list about problems with specific builds unless you've already tried to contact the build's maintainer and failed to get a response after a week or so. > It may be broken: removepkg said 'xargs: unmatched double quote; by > default quotes are special to xargs unless you use the -0 option'.? Congratulations, you've discovered a pkgtools bug (Slackware's makepkg, removepkg, etc). That same message occurs during the build, when running plan9port.SlackBuild. It's caused by these 2 files in the package: opt/plan9/bin/" opt/plan9/bin/"" Those are regular executables, with weird names. Slackware's pkgtools doesn't handle double-quotes in filenames correctly, possibly because no other package ever created *has* files named like that, so nobody thought to check for it. However, this is also something you should take up with the maintainer. And possibly with Pat V, since pkgtools is his creation. How to reach PV is left as an exercise for the reader. It doesn't look like the xargs error actually hurts anything in the case of plan9port... > If people want to change defaults, they'll read about it and do it. > Don't just do that automatically like one expects on WIndows, Apple, > Ubuntu, Android. We generally don't change defaults. If installing a package breaks something or changes something unrelated to the package, you should definitely contact the package's maintainer, explain the issue in detail. *Don't* tell the mailing list "I installed some font package 10+ years ago and it made my X fonts unreadable, but I can't remember which package" and expect us to be able to look into our crystal balls and magically be able to tell what the problem was. At the least you could check and see if that problem *was fixed* sometime in the last 10 years... There hasn't been a gphotofs release in over a decade, until a couple weeks ago. In 2013, when I last version-updated gphotofs, I had a camera I was able to test it with (in fact, that camera was the whole reason I wanted a gphotofs on SBo). I never made a lot of pictures, and at some point during the last 12 years I lost the camera. So there's now a gphotofs 1.0 release. I asked someone on IRC to test it with his cameras, and he reported 2 cameras that worked in 0.5 did *not* work in 1.0. So what I'm asking for... anyone here who uses gphotofs, or who owns a camera supported by the gphoto2 library[1] and would like to help out, please try building gphotofs 1.0 with the existing SlackBuild. All it needs is the 1.0 source: https://github.com/gphoto/gphotofs/releases/download/v1.0/gphotofs-1.0.tar.bz2 ...md5sum is 137e5b195409a1858c189ddd6dade823 Run the SlackBuild with the source in the script dir, and VERSION=1.0 in the environment. Install the gphotofs-1.0 package. See if your camera works. Let me know what results you get. Also. If anyone who actually uses gphotofs regularly would like to take over maintenance, that would work for me. I can't afford to go buy a camera I don't need *just* to test a piece of software I no longer need... [1] To see if your camera's supported, you can run this command: $ gphoto2 --list-cameras|less ...and page through or use / to search for your camera. Use wget. It will reconnect/continue automatically. Even if a download fails and leaves a partial file, you can use "wget -c" to continue where it left off. I haven't personally run into "github is inaccessible" or had downloads from it fail. Maybe there's a problem with your ISP? > Another option is if you can document where we can put .deb for > brave-browser-the-latest, like standard for sbopkg is /var/cache/sbopkg, > sbotools /usr/sbo/distfiles: If you're running SlackBuilds manually, without a tool like sbopkg or sbotools, the "source" (the .deb, in this case) goes in the same directory as the .Slackbuild and .info files. That's covered in the FAQ on our site, I'm surprised you're having trouble with this. If you're using sbopkg or sbotools, the standard location is defined by the tool's author. It has nothing to do with slackbuilds.org itself, our documentation is only for the stuff we actually created. See the documentation for the tool. This mailing list isn't really for sbopkg or sbotools discussion, I'm sure those tools have their own mailing lists. It's not *forbidden* to talk about them here, it's just not likely to be fruitful. It is not involved at all once your run /opt/google-chrome-the-latest and will require you to do any cleanup (since it doesn't seem to be provided by that scrip). The script included with the brave SlackBuild that has *absolutely nothing to do with SBo and tools that interact with SBo*. Your grievances should only be taken up with the SlackBuild maintainer since they decided to include a script that allows building newer versions than included on SBo without cleaning up the previous sources and seems to be currently broken.. All this is outside the SBo admins' control since the SlackBuild itself works properly. The fact that this is an entirely separate script from the SlackBuild on SBo intrinsically removes any fault of that script from SBo and its admins and places it solely on the SlackBuild maintainer. I look to have a python3-uv_build slackbuild working which is just the uv build backend and is all that is needed for odfdo (using the regular python build commands). I just got it working and it required a change to my vendoring script. This should mean we'll be able to build python3-uv properly too but I haven't gotten that far yet. > I saw the "-bin" discussion in the list but was it finally decided to > implement it? There are quite a few -bin's...48 to be exact! Cheers
