In my experience so far, errors during the ./configure are caused by missing 
dependencies.  Do have a GTK theme engine installed?  The gnome-theme-extras 
README file says you have to have GTK-engines installed (although I think qt-
gtk-engine would work too).

It bult for me just now when I tried it, so I'd check to make sure you're 
working on a stable full install of Slackware, with a GTK theme engine 
installed.
