Well hmatrix does have an "autodetect" mechanism because apparently  
there are some distro-specific differences about the names of the  
libraries it links to (no doubt due to issues like netlib not building  
the .so). But it doesn't seem to work detecting that lapack needs blas  
linked in too.

You did, but that effort was still slightly more than "run the  
reference blas slackbuild" :P And given I didn't care about  
performance it seemed unnecessary. I'll probably need the performance  
sometime, so I'll switch over to atlas once that happens.
