I have just tried the latest version of rc.postgresql from the above
link and I'm afraid to report that it does exactly the same thing. I
don't understand enough about the differences between sudo and su to
work out why su seems to always fail silently and not return any error
messages from pg_ctl.

Could anybody use either the stock rc.postgresql from SBo or the one
from the above link on their box and report if it is working for them
please? I am on Slackware 14.1 32bit with Postgresql 9.3.2

I'm not even sure why the pg_ctl binary is installed at
/usr/lib/postgresql/9.3/bin. Is including the version in the path a
Slackware thing or a Postgresql thing? Seems a little bit OTT to me.
