Argh - that is so right. I always configure non-interactive users on my 
servers with /bin/false as the shell (which is all users except for 
root, in my case). It never crossed my mind that this would affect the 
workings of the postgres user. I've changed the shell on the postgres 
user and it all works now. Lesson learned - but I'm a bit annoyed that I 
didn't think of that one myself!
