I played around with pico2wave, and I agree. The voice sounds less
mechanical, and seems to take punctuation into account for adding pauses.

It still sounds like a robot, you'd never mistake it for human, but it's
easier to understand than flite or espeak.

Mostly good quality. I dropped the ball on jack-tools...

So I have a working SlackBuild for pico2wave (actually, for "svox",
that's the source package name). It's for the latest version I could
find for Debian (1.0+git20130326-8), and it builds from source, including
all the Debian patches, plus a better man page and another patch to fix
a segfault-on-exit bug.

Actually, I just finished writing one :)

I'm about to submit it to SBo, unless you *really* are married to the
idea of writing your own & submitting it...?
