I've looked at gvfs as well, as it's going to be needed sooner
or later by xfce (4.8).  To get all of the backends built, you
will need the optional deps, unfortunately.  For http support,
which iirc includes davfs, you need libsoup-gnome, which is part
of the libsoup package IF libsoup is built with libproxy and 
gnome-keyring installed.
