I also use the upstream NVidia drivers with no real problems. The
main issue I have is that their /usr/lib64/libGL.la has a bug where it
references -L/usr/X11R6/lib instead of -L/usr/X11R6/lib64. I've
reported it upstream a long time ago, but it hasn't been fixed. I
just edit the file by hand every time I upgrade the driver. But I
notice that the SlackBuild does fix this, so it's unlikely to be your
problem...
