In my experiences tgz compresses faster, it is larger but the space
differences shouldn't matter if it is for local use only. Now if we can make
the default script set compression type then it would be more open for the
users to decide which is best for their needs.

i'm, too but we have to think of the compress-decompress speed, too. i
didn't see
much difference. i'll do some time mesuares of the script runs sometime
(i still haven't finished the update) .
