Recent versions of Awesome require altering quite a bit of Slackware's
packages (from the top of my head: recompile cairo to include xcb
support, update xcb-util, startup-notification, ...) which might go
against SBo's guidelines.

I maintain my own SlackBuild @
https://github.com/cycojesus/slackbuilds/tree/master/xap/awesome and I
have a document detailing all the steps needed to install it on a
stock Slackware if it can help you.
