May I recommend using Debian's patched-and-updated version of W3M
(https://github.com/tats/w3m) as the source for the w3m SlackBuild? It
has bugfixes that aren't present in the main project on Sourceforge.

I did email the maintainer directly. The email bounced. That's why I'm
making the recommendation here.

Note that the SlackBuild, as it is, already applies no less than 5
patches from the people who maintain w3m packages for their
distributions (in this case, Gentoo). So the "keep it pure" ship has
already sailed.
