Why would that be? It's a small & simple piece of software, it's got
a useful set of features, and the current version of it seems to work
just fine. The download tarball is still available, it compiles and
runs fine...
Just because it won't be receiving updates doesn't mean it's
suddenly useless and nonfunctional. 10 years from now, it will still
be functional. Perhaps there will be new image formats it doesn't
support, but I'm willing to bet they don't displace jpeg and png. At
worst, it'll need some minor patching to compile with whatever gcc
version we use in 2031.

Sure, why not? All the above isn't meant to convince you not to do
this, it's just meant to make you think about your "unmaintained
upstream = REMOVE IMMEDIATELY" approach.
