@dchmelik,
I don't see anything in the deb2tgz shell script where it created 
symlinks or doinst.sh or runs any binary other that mkdir, echo, 
chmod,ar, mv, and rm $TMPDIR...


deb2tgz just extracts the data.tar.gz in the .deb and  just renames it 
as a tgz.

Just ran it in a qemu VM.  no issues.

Sounds like you did something weird on your own.
