Sorry for the delay, but I think I've got this fixed.

I've removed the texmf-local directory from the package so that 
it won't be looked at unless the local sysadmin creates it, but
more importantly, I removed the "--syncwithtrees" option from 
the updmap-sys call in doinst.sh; it will spew some warnings 
about map files not being found (i.e. the ones in the other
-extra package), but those will be piped to /dev/null in the
installation stage anyway.

The new files are in the same location I specified earlier, so
please give them a go and see how they work.  The math file you
gave earlier built here on the first try, so it seems that all
is well.
